Lionel Hollins pushes Jerryd Bayless late in Game 4 loss

May 28, 2013, 9:02 AM EDT

In the fourth quarter of the Grizzlies’ Game 4 loss to the Spurs, Memphis coach Lionel Hollins pushed Jerryd Bayless near the Grizzlies bench (hat tip: Ben Golliver of Point Forward). It seems Bayless was sitting himself down anyway as Hollins pushed him, making the appearance that Hollins pushed Bayless down into a seat potentially misleading.

This was obviously a frustrating situation, Memphis just four minutes from its season ending, but that’s no excuse for Hollins to put his hands on Bayless like this. Of course, there are potential extenuating details unknown to us. We don’t see the inner workings of how Hollins and Bayless typically interact and whether behavior is out of the norm for them.

Besides, if the coach and player have a strong relationship based on mutual understanding, perhaps Bayless can forgive Hollins more easily if this crossed a line.

What is this? Kindergarten? I think Bayless is able to withstand a shove from someone 20-30 years older than he is…The Grizzles are about to get swept and Lionel Hollins is trying to do anything he can to get his players to rise to the occasion and play harder

I guess you don’t care if your boss pushes you, I do.
Great motivation tactic, push your employees to take a seat.

I work in a different environment than NBA players do…In the heat of the moment I can understand a coach being frustrated and grabbing or pushing a player if he’s not happy with the effort being put forth, and I never saw the big deal in this sort of thing…Wouldn’t you be angry with someone who you thought was hampering your chances to win or accomplish what you set out to accomplish?

Thanks for two videos of him forgetting Bayless’s name. It would have been better to see video of the push.

Im actually impressed with Hollins’ restraint. There were many times during the series when I felt like doing far worse things to Bayless than a gentle encouragement to sit down.

I wonder of he was your kid would you still think it’s cool.
I never saw the Zen Master shove a player, oh wait MJ did

Phil Jackson shoved Gasol in the stomach in the LAL-Dallas conference semifinals series 2 years ago when Dallas swept LA…

MJ punched all his white team mates in practice but backed off when Bill Cartwright and Robert Parish told him they would kill him if he threw one punch at them. One of the few wise moves by Mike off the court..
