“Forever Kobe” is latest NBA playoffs promo ad (VIDEO)

May 24, 2013, 2:34 PM EST

To answer your first question, that is Todd MacCulloch getting dunked on. He played for the Nets in 2002. That was one of those years when the real NBA finals was the Lakers vs. Kings in the Western Conference Finals — whichever team got through that war was going to steamroll New Jersey. Which is what happened, the Lakers swept past them.

And that is some vintage Kobe Bryant right there, back when his hops took him out of the building.

I like the NBA’s ads this season, taking big moments from guys like Dirk Nowitzki and now Kobe. In both cases those are guys that changed the basketball culture in their cities. And got to hold the Larry O’Brien trophy.

Ahh the 2002 Western Conference Finals, the most asterisked series of all time.

I wonder why NBA-TV never shows anything from the ’02 Finals on Hardwood Classics?

  3. chrismt79 - May 24, 2013 at 3:31 PM

Interesting year to pull a highlight from. Seeing as that series was… well.. as legitimate as the draft, and the tooth fairy, etc…

I think even David Stern got a ring after this championship.

  4. bucrightoff - May 24, 2013 at 3:37 PM

What they should have shown was Kobe breaking Mike Bibby’s nose and Bibby getting called for the foul.

For all you young guys. Do a little search for 2002 King’s Vs Lakers. Hopefully you’re already familar, but it always helps renew my distaste for a certain few players/team.

Why in the world is a guy who didn’t even play in this year’s playoffs the guy the NBA chooses to do their playoff promotion around? Kobe is one of the best ever, but has had no impact on this year’s playoffs whatsoever.

    • paleihe - May 24, 2013 at 5:10 PM

Cause Kobe is one of the most recognized people in the world. Unless they use Lebron, nobody else has Kobe’s star power.

    • dafmediaproductions - May 24, 2013 at 5:21 PM

Dirk didn’t play in this year’s playoffs and he got the 1st commercial.

    • fanofevilempire - May 25, 2013 at 7:31 AM

did Dallas make the playoffs, I saw Dirk in a commercial.

  7. saint1997 - May 24, 2013 at 5:11 PM

    I miss Kobe :(

  8. losanginsight - May 24, 2013 at 5:33 PM

The 2002 WC Finals was a classic. Keep in mind Kobe was playing at the same level this season. Also, 2002 was not a
    * short season like last year.

  9. decimusprime - May 24, 2013 at 6:29 PM

Because it’s about the emotion involved in being in the playoffs. Mamba has been the playoffs almost the whole time he’s been in the league…

  10. onbucky96 - May 24, 2013 at 7:24 PM

Forever me not caring. Kobe couldn’t carry Mike’s jock. Hope Kobe never plays again.

If the Pacers go on to win the Finals, Paul George’s dunk over the Birdman will become the new NBA Forever ad.

  12. rickyspanish - May 25, 2013 at 2:17 AM

    Those ads are dope.

  13. asimonetti88 - May 25, 2013 at 3:55 AM

Love the ad. Great dunk. Those Lakers teams were so good and very fun to watch
