Report: Sixers players grew tired of Doug Collins. Shocking, I know.

Doug Collins is old school as a coach — long practices, a strong personality, a lot of tough love.

That wears on players. And Collins. There’s a reason he doesn’t last anywhere longer than three years. That includes Philadelphia, where he stepped down as coach after this season.

And not shockingly, the Sixers players were tired of him, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. Which is why when looking for a new coach they are looking at guys (Brian Shaw, Mike Malone and others) known for good relationships with players.

All of the candidates – and there are others, according to majority owner Joshua Harris – are a stark departure from former coach Doug Collins, who guided the Sixers to the third-worst winning percentage (.415) in their last 15 seasons before resigning last month.

According to team sources, some of the players became frustrated with Collins’ old-school ways or, as one Sixer said, his “tendency to be overbearing.”

You need to think about this when your team is hiring a coach — is this guys a fit for the kind of team you are building. Some teams need discipline, some need a guy they can relate to and respect more. Depends on the personality of the key people in your locker room. Coaches are not one size fits all.
