Reports: Bucks interested in Stan Van Gundy for coaching job

May 2, 2013, 12:41 PM EDT

Orlando's Stan Van Gundy shouts during an NBA playoff basketball game in Indianapolis Reuters

Is the Milwaukee Bucks job one that would really draw Stan Van Gundy off his very comfortable couch?

I’m not so sure, but multiple reports have him as the top target of the Bucks.

For example, there is Ken Berger at CBSSports.com (who says Kelvin Sampson and others also will be interviewed).

The Bucks will interview Van Gundy and Sampson, the Rockets’ top assistant, for the job vacated Wednesday when interim coach Jim Boylan was let go, league sources said…. Stan Van Gundy has long been a favorite of Bucks GM John Hammond, who is looking for a defensive-minded coach who will be able to “control the locker room,” one source said.

Both Yahoo Sports and the Orlando Sentinel confirmed that Van Gundy is the top target.

Van Gundy wants to win, is he really going to go to a Bucks team that was below .500, only made the playoffs because other teams below them collapsed worse than they did, and now face a very uncertain future with their roster? Remember that Monta Ellis, Brandon Jennings, J.J. Redick and Mike Dunleavy are all free agents (Jennings is restricted, so the Bucks can match any offer). This is a roster about to undergo an overhaul.

Van Gundy going to leave the warm weather of Florida for that?

That said, expect Van Gundy to have a conversation with the Bucks.

The Bucks have to go all in for one of these two guys. It is time that the Bucks have a real coach who can put players in a position to best utilize their skills. I have been encouraged by the head coaching move and rumors of the Bucks in the past few days, now they just need to start talking new/renovated arena so that the Bucks will stay put in Milwaukee.

Van Gundy will go to the clippers if they get eliminated 1st round cuz Vinnie won’t get a new contract.

Clips won’t offer SVG that job.

They do need good coach to maximize players ability. There are some guys with good ability, Sanders could develop into a really good PF. I think Henson can improve over the next few seasons as well.

Personally I think a coach of Van Gundy’s caliber, would like to know what he is going to get to work with, and with all the ?’s especially in the Bucks back court I think it may be difficult to land coach. One that is landed, is going to want more say about the players coming in. I don’t think the owner will let that happen.

Wish they would take JeffVG and get him off of the air.

SVG will not get a better offer than Milwaukee. He would be stupid to turn it down. However, he is certainly not the sharpest coach in the league.
