Jerry Sloan still willing to return to NBA, whip your team into shape

When the talk of filling coaching vacancies candidates usually fall into a couple clear categories. One is your up and coming assistants — Brian Shaw, Mike Malone, etc. Another is recycle coaches who want another shot, your Nate McMillan and Stan Van Gundy types.

But Jerry Sloan is still out there, too.

The long-time Jazz coach and noted old-school disciplinarian told Chris Tomasson of Fox Sports Florida (via Sulia) he would come back to the game. But not just for any team (so don’t bother, Bobcats).

“Yeah, probably, if I thought it would be the right situation,’’ Sloan, a Hall of Famer, told FOX Sports Florida on Thursday about still being interested in coaching.

“I’ve not aware of any (interest from teams with vacancies),’’ Sloan said. “I haven’t said hello to anybody.’’

Again, Sloan is 71 and not exactly a guy who is going to be warm and fuzzy with your young, developing players. He’s more of a tough love guy. He’s not a fit everywhere.

But if you want to create a team identity, to run a system where the ball and the players move, where there is accountability, he could be your guy. It just has too be the right fit for both sides.
