Jason Collins is the first active NBA player, the first active American major team sport athlete, to come out as gay. He did so Monday in what will be viewed as a watershed moment.

Collins also will not be the last to come out. David Stern knows that and struck the right tone in issuing a statement in support of Collins.

“As Adam Silver and I said to Jason, we have known the Collins family since Jason and Jarron joined the NBA in 2001 and they have been exemplary members of the NBA family,” Stern said. “Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue.”

One of the first current or former players to comment was Baron Davis, who has worked this postseason as an analyst on NBA TV these playoffs. He went to twitter.
