Veteran NBA big man Jason Collins on Monday made a statement about the changes in society that goes beyond the basketball court:

He became the first active NBA player to come out as gay.

Collins came out in an article for Sports Illustrated Monday, and when he told his story to the people at SI Jon Wertheim was in the room. Wertheim went on the Dan Patrick show to talk about why now and what led up to the announcement, as well as the broader impact around the NBA.

I think it’s commendable for any basketball player to admit that he’s a ball hog.

Jason Collins personifies what it means to be a ‘man’. He’s going to live openly, honestly, and with integrity. He’s undoubtedly faced racism and now he’ll face homophobia, but he’s stronger than people who sit anonymously behind a keyboard and spew hate or those who hide in a crowd at a game and yell insults. As a gay man who loves watching football, basketball, hockey, tennis, lacrosse, and even golf on occassion, I’ve heard fans yell homophobic taunts and laughed to myself at how pathetic they were in comparison to the athletes on the field/court. But the times they are a changin’ and Mr. Collins is leading the way.
