Brian Shaw is once again going to get a number of job interviews this off-season… well, once the Pacers start to have an off-season.
And among the teams he will talk to is the Philadelphia 76ers, reports Dei Lynam CSNPhilly.com.
The Sixers, according to a source, have contacted the Pacers’ associate head coach about their vacant head-coaching position. Because the Pacers are in the playoffs, Shaw will interview for the position when the time is appropriate.
The Sixers job is open because Doug Collins has stepped away (into a nebulous front office consulting role).
Shaw was a 14-year NBA veteran who upon retirement joined Phil Jackson’s staff with the Lakers, where he rose the ranks to becoming a top assistant (and won a couple championship rings as an assistant). While the Lakers players wanted Shaw to take over for Jackson management (read: Jim Buss) wanted a new direction and brought in Mike Brown.
Shaw went to Indiana where he has worked with Frank Vogel and helped turn the Pacers into a top three team in the East. Shaw is respected by players and has a great hoops IQ. He seems groomed for the job.
A number of teams will likely talk to Shaw and he will get a job offer he wants. Lynam also reports the rumor that Shaw was offered the Bobcats job last year but didn’t like the fit (that’s something top assistants can do, turn down jobs that seem destined to fail in the short term to wait for a better landing spot).
The Sixers have some nice young players starting with Jrue Holiday at the point, also Thaddeus Young and Evan Turner (well, they need to figure out what to do with him). But the Sixers need to figure out what Andrew Bynum and also figure out what kind of team they are trying to build.
