No more Mr. Nice Guy: Kevin Durant fined $25,000 for “menacing gesture”

Apr 12, 2013, 6:23 PM EDT

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant is greeted by fans as he exits the arena after the second half of their NBA basketball game against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City, Utah Reuters

I thought he was supposed to be the nicest player in the NBA?

But Kevin Durant has been fined $25,000 by the league $25,000 for making a menacing gesture, it was announced by Stu Jackson, Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.

It came on a play you may remember from the second quarter, with 1:45 on the clock Stephen Curry slipped by Russell Westbrook and drove the lane, but Westbrook recovered and made a huge block that ignited a fast break the other way.

Durant finished it with a dunk, and as he did gave a little stare to a nearby official and clapped a couple times going up court. At least that’s what I saw when I watched the play on a wide shot, but apparently he made a throat slashing gesture.

It was about as menacing as a Will Smith rap, but that gesture will get you fined.

considering the things that are on tv today, this is nonsense.

  5. eboneseagles - Apr 12, 2013 at 7:29 PM

If Lebron did this he wouldn’t get a fine, the refs would probably just give him even more calls because they are intimidated.

Saw that play. Immediately after he dunks he kind of does the fingers across the neck thing. Not totally sure but I think thats why he got fined.

So he got the same punishment for a [non]gesture that Serge Ibaka got for straight-up punching a dude in the nards? Good work, NBA.

It’s Stu Jackson in charge. Doctor dropped him on his head coming out of mama, they dropped again when Stu tried to trade himself to the Wizards.

It’s time he puts the nice guy thing off the court and become an assassin on the court. Kobe and Jordan have/had it.

  12. allen227 - Apr 13, 2013 at 7:33 AM

    I agree with @eboneseagles.

Can fines for “mean thoughts” be far behind?

  16. bigbenh8tr - Apr 15, 2013 at 11:19 AM

Lebron does this almost on a nightly basis going back to when he was in Cleveland, and usually in a somewhat violent manner and not just like what’s in this video. Pretty obvious he’s doing it if all it took to find this on youtube was to search “Lebron James throat gesture”
