Hornets’ Anthony Davis out for season with MCL sprain

The good news is this is not serious, and when the injury happened it looked like it could have been.

New Orleans’ No. 1 pick Anthony Davis will be out for the season due to a sprained MCL plus a bone bruise in his left knee, suffered in the fourth quarter Wednesday night against the Kings, the team announced on Thursday. Davis had an MRI done and no serious structural damage was found.

Which is a relief because it looked a lot worse when it happened. Midway through the fourth quarter Davis tried to draw a charge as Marcus Thornton drove the lane. When they collided Thornton fell on Davis’ left knee.

Davis grabbed his knee in pain and was helped off the court. Reports out of the locker room later that night said he was limping.

Davis should be ready to go for Summer League, if the Hornets send him there. And he should be ready to go next season. Davis has averaged 13.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game this season. But he has shown a high basketball IQ and smart game that has grown as the season has worn on — in the last 15 games he has averaged 15.8 points on 54.1 percent shooting with 9.2 rebounds a game.

And he should make bigger jumps next season.
