Iman Shumpert shaves adidas logo into the back of his head, later removes it and apologizes

Iman Shumpert of the Knicks is all about doing his own thing where his hair is concerned, as evidenced by his 80s style high-top fade he’s been rocking for the bulk of the season.

Shump may have overstepped his bounds on Friday, however, when he showed up for the game between the Knicks and the Bucks with the adidas logo firmly on display, shaven into the back of his head.

Unfortunately, the NBA has rules against such gestures, and apparently got in touch with Shumpert about using his head as a billboard for the sneaker company that sponsors him.

Personally, I don’t see the difference between a logo on a guy’s shoes and one on his head. But in the NBA’s eyes, rules are rules.

He should shave the Knicks logo on his head now. What stern gonna say about that?

    • fanofevilempire - Apr 8, 2013 at 6:53 AM

so if he had a tattoo of adidas logo he would have to laser it off.

he should have signed with nike, nba loves nike.

Stern. The guy lives up to his name, that’s for sure.

  6. dalucks - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:53 AM

So it is ok for the NBA to overcharge Adidas for a non profitable uniform deal but players cannot promote Adidas.
Only in the day of Stern.
I guess Bacardi is still a marketing partner also. A rum company so what else does Bacardi market other than rum.
Maybe Stern is making decisions after too much Bacardi, official marketing partner of NBA.

Does this mean NBA players with similar tattoos have to cover them up or have them removed? For example, Gortat, a center on the suns, has a bright red nike insignia on his right calf.

    • money2long - Apr 7, 2013 at 1:28 AM

i thought gortat had a jumpman logo on his calf. maybe he has both.

Aiight guys, why this hasn’t been called out is beyond me but…………look at the picture on the left…the one without the hat and the texturized hair………………..why does Iman have TWO ears on one side??

    • tommy972 - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Because that is picture of him standing in front of someone else, so it is someone else’s ear.

      • fanofevilempire - Apr 8, 2013 at 6:58 AM

maybe Mike Tyson bit someone ear and spit it out and it landed
on Shumperts ear and now he has a double ear.
maybe he will have super human hearing like bionic woman.

  10. mikeythelectrician - Apr 7, 2013 at 6:04 AM

this Kidd shumpert is an idiot, that hairdoo belongs on a woman in a cheap hair salon not an NBA player

    • fanofevilempire - Apr 8, 2013 at 1:15 PM

you should tattoo mikeymousethelectrician on your forehead, that
      would be awesome!

  12. biasedhomer - Apr 7, 2013 at 7:28 AM

What about Stephon Marbury having his logo on his head?

  13. 13arod - Apr 7, 2013 at 8:58 AM

if i was the nba comminser i would be happy that he was trying to promote addias

  14. titansbro - Apr 7, 2013 at 10:31 AM

This is why the NBA sucks now. Marketing is more important than the game. I love basketball but the NBA is trash.

  15. nobandwagonridersallowed - Apr 7, 2013 at 11:41 AM

This is absolutely ridiculous. So you’re telling this young man that he can wear the shoe that sponsors him, which happens to be adidas, but he can’t sport a logo in HIS hair of the same sponsor… I guess adidas isn’t paying the NBA enough for a double advertising slot. In the end, it’s all about the mighty dollar. He should be able to put or wear anything on his body that doesn’t compromise the integrity of the NBA. #Sad

I wish Rodman was still playing, because he would wear the logo in his hair and wouldn’t apologize for doing so. He’d be like “G.T.F.O.H, Stern, you may control a lot of things but you don’t control anything I choose to do with MY body…. (disclaimer) I am not saying I agree with Rodman’s views or tactics he displays outside of the NBA…

    • LPad - Apr 8, 2013 at 12:52 PM

I was just about to post the exact same thing. The only way this makes sense is that the NBA is claiming an advertising right to a player’s body. They’re essentially telling adidas to give us a cut if you want Shump to put the logo in his hair. We probably won’t hear much about this now, but this will come up during negotiations for the next collective bargaining agreement. This is very similar to the NBA demanding the players should give them a cut on their advertising contracts during the lockout.
