Watch Andre Drummond airball two free throws (VIDEO)

Apr 1, 2013, 8:42 AM EDT

Ouch.

Andre Drummond has had a very promising rookie season — the Pistons’ big man has looked like he could be the second best player out of this past draft class at points this year (behind Anthony Davis, and yes better than Damian Lillard down the line). He is athletic, gets to the rim and can finish there, plus he can rebound and defend.

What he can’t do is make free throws — he’s shooting 36.1 percent this season. And these two free throws from the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss to Chicago were as bad as it gets. This summer he needs to get that percentage up before “hack-a-Drummond” becomes an NBA trend.

Thanks to Ben Golliver at The Point Forward for the video.

These guys get paid millions to play a game, you think bad free throw shooting would be a kink they worked out earlier, rather than later.

I agree in general, but Drummond is a rookie who only spent 1 year in college.

It took Tyson Chandler 10 years to become a consistently decent free throw shooter (65+%). Dwight Howard, if anything, became a worse free throw shooter the longer he was in the NBA. Etc.

So I’d cut Drummond some slack, but at the same time, I would agree he needs to be much better next year.

I don’t get how players air ball free throws. Better to overthrow it than underthrow, at least with the former a lucky bounce can knock it in.

it’s crazy how many thoughts can go through one’s mind during free throw shooting. the best ones are able to block everything and everyone out and focus on the rim.

If you’re going to be a foot short on the first one, you really need to be aiming for the shot clock in the second one. I actually felt bad for the guy.

Embarrassing. Kenyon Martin airballed one last night also SMH.

Give him credit for getting closer…the second one at least touched the net. The first one may have been three full feet short.

I’d give him break, over 7′ and a 19 year old rookie. Probably should put up a hoop at home to get some extra shots up, though.

$5 million just doesn’t get you what it used to anymore
