Rockets Omer Asik fined $5,000 for flopping (VIDEO)

Mar 29, 2013, 8:00 AM EST

Back in December, the NBA warned Rockets center and defensive anchor Omer Asik about flopping when he embellished a minor contact with Tim Duncan to draw a foul.

Three months later Asik was up to his old tricks and this time he’s going to pay for it.

The league announced Thursday Asik will be fined $5,000 for a flop against Duncan last Sunday. Once again Asik embellished a minor contact — and once again it worked. He drew the foul in a game that ended up being a one-point Rockets win.

The timing of Asik’s penalties from the league seems to coincide with their sudden focus on this issue again as the playoffs near. The problem is the $5,000 fine isn’t going to deter a player from anything, especially in a playoff game.

The money won’t deter these guys, but what might work is if they see certain guys get a stigma among refs and then no longer get calls. If they see guys like Asik start getting abused inside while the refs swallow their whistles because he has earned a reputation as a flopper, then they will pay attention because that will impact how effective they are on the court and ultimately how much money they make.

Unfortunately superstar floppers are unlikely to be affected as the refs will always give them calls, and some of the most egregious floppers are superstars.

Agreed. The current system is built to change behavior over the long-term via stigma.

When it comes to short-term calculations, as Kurt mentioned, players would *happily* accept a $5,000 fine in exchange for drawing a foul on a star player like Tim Duncan.
The hope is that once referees stop protecting these floppers even when they actually are fouled, the floppers will decide it’s not worth it anymore.

The Heat do worse ten to twenty times a game.
