Report: Mavericks will sign Justin Dentmon

Raptors guard Dentmon drives to the basket against Cavaliers guard Hudson during the first half of their NBA basketball game in Toronto

Rodrigue Beaubois is likely out for the rest of the season, so the Dallas Mavericks are continuing to experiment with replacement-level guards. Marc Stein of ESPN:

Sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com that the Mavericks will next sign guard Justin Dentmon from their own D-League affiliate to a 10-day deal, most likely finalizing a contract with the Texas Legends’ leading scorer Monday.

The team on Friday notified Chris Wright — who now ranks as the only player in NBA history known to have multiple sclerosis — that he would not be receiving a second 10-day deal.

The Mavericks have cycled through plenty of guards this season – Derek Fisher, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Mike James and Chris Wright. So far, only James has stuck.

It’s unlikely Dentmon, who is averaging 26.0 points per game with the Texas Legends and played a combined six games for the San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors last season, becomes the second – but he could, and that’s the beauty of Dallas’ strategy. By giving so many guards extended tryouts, the Mavericks are giving themselves at least a chance to find that coveted diamond in the rough. The plan is sound, even if it’s unlikely to bear fruit.
