PBT Extra: Players fans of NBA lottery teams should watch in NCAA Tournament

NBA scouts have been watching NBA guys they may want to draft for a while now, attending practices and dissecting game tape. NBA fans, we put too much weight on the small sample size of the NCAA Tournament when forming our opinions, because we didn’t do all that background work.

Today at PBT Extra, Kay Adams and I talk about a few guys fans of NBA lottery bound teams may want to watch — such as shooting guards Ben McLeMore of Kansas and Shabazz Muhammad of UCLA. They likely both go in the top 5 come the draft. And then there are guys to watch because scouts are curious how they do against stiffer competition — Kelly Olynyk, the center from Gonzaga, is a key guy in that category. He owned the West Coast Conference, but what happens when he runs into guys just as big and maybe a little more athletic than him.

Finally we talk injured Kentucky center Nerlens Noel and what the ACL surgery and the Wildcat’s season means to his draft spot (not much, really).

Say what you want about Kurt, the guy can nod with the best of ‘em. I’m guessing that’s a nervous tick from being on camera. I would probably not handle that as well and just shake uncontrollably.

Noel is going to be great. I’d say he’s more of a Marcus Camby type than Davis is… Davis will be better.

I’m working on my television side, but I have a lot of work to do.

I think Camby is a better comp.

Yeah man, anxiety like Royce White here. Handle it better than I would.

We know the NBA lottery is rigged. If the Lakers don’t make the playoffs they will have the first pick. Or Mark Cuban will grease Stern’s palm before he retires.

2012 New Orleans gets the first pick because of their new ownership
2011 Cleveland gets the first pick because of a make good for losing LeBron
2010 Washington gets the first pick because you have to make it not look like it’s rigged
2009 Clippers get the first pick because you want the biggest market to get 1st pick
2008 Chicago gets the first pick because you want the biggest market to get the 1st pick
2007 Portland gets the first pick because you need to make it not look rigged
2006 Toronto gets the first pick because you want the forgeiner to go to the only foriegn team
2005 Milwaukee gets the first pick because you need to keep it not look rigged
2004 Orlando gets the first pick because you feel bad from them losing Shaq
2003 Cleveland gets the first pick because you want LeBron to stay home in Ohio and help the Cavs
2002 Houston gets the first pick because they are a big market
2001 Washington gets the first pick because they are the nations capital
2000 New Jersey gets the first pick because they are the biggest market
1999 Chicago gets the first pick because they are a big market
1998 Clippers get the first pick because they are a big market
1997 San Antonio gets the first pick because you want to add to a good team
1996 Philadelphia gets the first pick because they are a big market
1995 Golden State gets the first pick because you need Oakland as a market
1994 Milwaukee gets the first pick because you don’t it known it’s rigged
1993 Orlando gets the first pick because you want Orlando to become a power
1992 Orlando gets the first pick because you want Orlando to become successful
1991 Charlotte gets the first pick because you throw them a bone for joining the league
1990 New Jersey gets the first pick because you want the best player in the best market
1989 Sacramento gets the first pick because you want to keep them from thinking it’s rigged
1988 Clippers get the first pick because they are the biggest market
1987 San Antonio gets first pick because you need them to win

Patrick Ewing, best player biggest market

WTF are you talking about? Conspiracy theories are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately.. you said: 1989 Sacramento gets the first pick because you want to keep them from thinking it’s rigged

With that sideways logic you can make an excuse for ANY of the other teams in the NBA and why they got the #1!

    • hojo20 - Mar 21, 2013 at 8:45 PM

      uh, and about 1986?

    Kurt, you like Muhammad?

I don’t. I’ve not been impressed….at all. He’s not athletic or quick and even after 4 months of action he still looks out of shape. Maybe that’s just his body type. When you’re not an athlete I think you need to do something well. I don’t really know what he does well. I’ve heard the Jimmy Harden comps but I think that’s just lazy left-handed equivalence. I think Muhammad’s a fail.

What about Bennett playing the 3. Isn’t he athletic enough to play up, think a Michael Beasley-type, just more compatible.
