Dahntay Jones tells Dan Patrick he was just making a basketball play

There’s not a lot new here in terms of substance — the night Kobe Bryant went down with a sprained ankle and was saying it was a dirty play by Dahntay Jones, Jones was on twitter defending himself. Then Jones went on the radio and defended himself.

Friday he was on the Dan Patrick show saying the same thing. You can watch the video yourself.

The League came out and said this was a foul — and they are right, Jones didn’t give Kobe room to land. (That is different from saying it was intentional or dirty, I don’t believe it was.) But the league has to be more consistent about this call. This case got highlighted because it was Kobe, but we have seen a lot of this throughout the season and that call has consistently not been made. The league should make it a priority to make that call, but do it wisely — guys should have the right to contest, and I don’t want to see Dwyane Wade leaning in with his body on a shot then getting a call because he didn’t have room to land.

Jumping into a shooter who is clearly fading away is dirty – period

Sorry Dahntay, it was a bit dirty. No player whips his leg under a shooter like that. Dirty is the new NBA I guess.

You dont have to explain yourself to a bunch of people that have never even played the sport….

Waaah Waaah. Shut up Kobe. You don’t get to land properly when you fade away and kick out your front leg. It was a game-tying shot. What did you expect Jones to do, jump straight up in the air? No he jumps at the same angle as you and tries to block your shot. You don’t like it? Then don’t fade-away. Waaah. Waaah.

Cuban: psst, hey DJ, I’ll slide you a cool million to injury that a__hole, Kobe.
DJ: a million bucks?! Heck yeah I’ll do it! I would’ve done it for free!!

I saw the play as it happened. The Lakers were down and the Hawks was really trying hard on defense. DJ was hurriedly contesting the shot because the game was close. DJ, while contesting the shot, was actually trying to get away by going past Kobe to Kobe’s right, but Kobe landed on DJ’s foot. Not leg, like if he was intentionally trying to do it- but his foot.

What Dahntay is guilty of is a foul. There should have been two shots, but it wasn’t a play where Dahntay was trying to hurt Kobe.

I’m not sure which video Dan Patrick was watching but I don’t understand why he says Jones “wasn’t contesting the shot”. That’s exactly what he was doing! The reason Kobe landed on his foot was because Jones stayed on the floor and didn’t jump at the shot like most defenders would. He was playing hard defence and it may be a foul because he walked into him but it wasn’t dirty and obviously the three officials on the floor didn’t think it was a foul despite the fact that it was a pampered superstar taking a game winning shot.
