Honestly, unless Derrick Rose starts playing soon, there’s little chance Rose would be very effective in the playoffs, which start in just over a month.

It’s going to take awhile for Rose to get back up to speed – Ricky Rubio only recently began looking like his old self, and Iman Shumpert doesn’t have all of his agility back yet. When the original timeline for return was the All-Star Break (a month ago), that might have given Rose time to adjust to playing NBA basketball again, as well as dealing with any setbacks.

The Bulls aren’t winning the Finals with a sluggish Derrick Rose, so unless Rose starts playing in the next 2 weeks, they should just shut him down for this season.

Ask Rubio how smart it was to come back soon. The press killed him and ran 2 months of “Rubio may never return to his former self” until he finally started playing himself back into shape. Situation really isn’t that different, I mean, the Timberwolves were willing to piss off Kevin Love because they wanted to save their 5 year extension for him, he’s the star of the future, and that’s small market Minnesota where only NBA die hards pay attention: the scrutiny would be 10 times worse in Chicago and people forget that Rose is only 24. I don’t care who you are or what you do, that kind of pressure is hard to handle when you’re still young like that, and especially when the only remaining issue is his confidence. There is nobody quite like Rose when he is healthy, he’s a really special guy to watch, and the league needs him in top shape in every way for the next 10 years.

All the talk about this year’s roster or chasing the Heat or whatever is pure b.s. in my opinion. Bottom line: he’s an elite athlete and until he feels he’s ready, he shouldn’t come back. The last thing you want an athlete of his caliber doing is thinking on the court. The game is so instinctive to him that if he has to think about whether or not his knee will react as he wants it to when he wants it to, it takes an edge of his away. It changes his effectiveness. I’m a lifelong Bulls fans and can’t wait for him to return… but I will (gladly) until next year if it means he plays like he used to.

Given the unrealistic pressure and expectations that will be unfairly expected out of him in his return. In my opinion, it would be in the best interest of Derrick Rose to sit out this season and start fresh next season when he feels and knows for sure that he is 100% mentally and physically healthy.
Playing now only benefits the Bulls and when Rose wants to sign another contract, the Bulls will raise all of these false concerns about his health in an attempt to low ball him his contract extension.
Take care of yourself because in Pro sports, only you care about yourself and your well being.
