LeBron, Wade wonder publicly why Serge Ibaka was not suspended

Mar 5, 2013, 8:26 PM EDT

Miami Heat's James and Wade react after a play against the Boston Celtics during the first half in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Finals NBA basketball playoffs in Boston Reuters

When the news was released today that Serge Ibaka would be fined $25,000 for his below-the-belt hit on Blake Griffin during the Thunder’s win over the Clippers on Sunday, it wasn’t a shock that a suspension wasn’t handed down, but it was a bit of a surprise.

The league hasn’t been afraid to retroactively drop the hammer after officials during a game came down lightly on a particular offense, as they did in the case of the elbow Metta World Peace landed to the head of Kenneth Faried.

Look a little further back to December, and you’ll see that Dwyane Wade was suspended for a game in the days following a kick to the groin of Ramon Sessions.

Groin shots are groin shots, at least in the eyes of Wade and LeBron James. Neither could believe that Ibaka’s penalty wasn’t harsher, and they each voiced their respective opinions to the millions following them on Twitter.

The confusion is the league’s fault to a certain extent, because public explanations of the reasoning behind these decisions are not readily available, and are rarely published.

In the age where players have direct access to give their opinions on the news of the day via social media, there’s going to be plenty more reactions like this unless explanations are given as to the reason why one play is a suspension, when another very similar play is only worthy of a relatively insignificant fine.

Wade’s groin kick was debatable and got suspended.. Ibaka was no doubt a nut tap and just a 25k fine

    • hodaghunter - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:18 AM

Wait you still think that Wade’s knee to the groin is “debatable”? It was clear cut with ill intent.

    • fanofevilempire - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:17 PM

      a nut tap ?
men don’t hit other men there.

  2. mcsuave - Mar 5, 2013 at 8:36 PM

Agreed. Suspension should have been in order, but no. They want to pick on lil JJ Barea.

  3. illegalblues - Mar 5, 2013 at 8:37 PM

wade hasn’t dropped that way of wade crap yet? jesus christ

    • dko83 - Mar 5, 2013 at 8:59 PM

I know, I cringe at it honestly. If no pun intended why capitalize the second W. Really lame.

      • zerole00 - Mar 6, 2013 at 10:15 AM

I can almost sense LeBron shaking his head after seeing Wade’s tweet.

  4. dirtydavis - Mar 5, 2013 at 8:37 PM

Dude, Ibaka was aiming for B. Griffin nuts but didn’t hit him there. He got him near his pelvis area

  5. deiong - Mar 5, 2013 at 8:45 PM

same reason wade didnt get suspended when boston beat then last year, before stern had the refs give the cheaten heat the series, then championship, that they did not earn….. or same reason lebron hasnt been fined or suspended for all the flopping he still does… if they can answer those questions then maybe they will know why there wasnt a suspension….

    • kinggw - Mar 5, 2013 at 8:52 PM

I wonder from which bitter fan base do you come from?

What exactly should Wade have been suspended for in the C’s series last year?

    • craighsite - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:41 PM

You’re an idiot! Still better I see!

  6. drewzducks - Mar 5, 2013 at 8:51 PM

Maybe the amount of the fine is proportionate to size of the, ahem, target. If so, good for you Ramon. Sorry Blake.

    • miamatt - Mar 5, 2013 at 9:01 PM

Early nominee for comment of the month right there. I even heard the next Kia commercial will have Blake giving his younger self a bottle of Extenz.

      • frankiebooboo - Mar 5, 2013 at 9:17 PM

You obviously must’ve missed the comment about the 7foot ginger from the Supersonics. That was the comment of the month.

  7. cdins - Mar 5, 2013 at 9:09 PM

200k a game, a million to join dunk contest? Overpaid, every last one of’em

    • mytthor - Mar 5, 2013 at 9:47 PM

Actually if you look at the amount of money big time star players bring in for their franchise, they’re pretty seriously underpaid. I mean of course they’re paid to play basketball when it comes down to it, so it sucks for people like us, but it’s not unfair. Think about it this way. Dwyane Wade is one of the best 20 or so people in the entire country at his job (if you say NBA players; obviously if you say Shooting Guards he’s one of the best 5 or so). If you were one of the best 5 people in the country at your job, you’d probably be making a whole lot of money as well.

What if I was a janitor?

      • zerole00 - Mar 6, 2013 at 10:16 AM

The restrooms on the 6th floor are disgusting – you aren’t a top 5 janitor.

    • lmoneyfresh - Mar 6, 2013 at 10:33 AM

You obviously have zero clue how supply and demand works.

  8. libertarianvoter - Mar 5, 2013 at 9:23 PM

To add to the various theories, maybe the NBA is baiting players by making this (insane) decision, waiting until everybody with half a brain points out the hypocrisy, then raking in the fines. David Stern has always looked like a troll, now he’s acting like one.

  9. jake4192 - Mar 5, 2013 at 9:36 PM

Same reason wade wasn’t suspended for breaking rondo arm in the playoffs

  10. cosanostra71 - Mar 5, 2013 at 10:01 PM

    Wade whining? Color me shocked.

  11. ezwriter69 - Mar 5, 2013 at 10:17 PM

YouTube: Chris Paul Wake Forest groin pull
Blake might not have it in him to retaliate, but you best keep your eye out for the little man, Serge, he might just get some real revenge.

    • Mr. Wright 212 - Mar 5, 2013 at 10:34 PM

I officially began hating Napoleon Paul that night. I was already disgusted before that with the CONSTANT references to his grandfather’s murder — as if no one else ever had to go through losing a parent or grandparent that helped raise them — but that clinched it. I hate him probably more than anyone not named Dwyane Wade.

      • craighsite - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:51 PM

What an insensitive prick! Major events like that shape lives–for better or worse! You’re talking about a 17 year old (at the time). Just because others go through it doesn’t make it easier to deal with! It’s never that bad until it happens to you! Where’s your humanity Bro!? That’s real life not some sporting event! In your pedestrian immature mind if you can’t distinguish that then God Bless!…. Hate……? Get a grip!

      • jimeejohnson - Mar 6, 2013 at 9:14 PM

        Just won’t let you be…nO-nO!

  12. Mr. Wright 212 - Mar 5, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Does Wade wonder publicly why he wasn’t suspended for punching Sessions, or for blatantly pushing Collison in the back in last year’s playoffs?

    • lmoneyfresh - Mar 6, 2013 at 10:34 AM

Or the forearm shiver to Rip a few years back? The list goes on and on.

  13. kb2408 - Mar 5, 2013 at 10:53 PM

Winning a title doesn’t make you the spokesperson for the NBA…stfu!!

  14. jjones314 - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:13 PM

I give Cleveland fans a pass for all the LBJ and Heat hatred. But everybody else, let it go. Stop obsessing over the Heat and everything Wade/ LBJ says and does. Move on. Talk about something else for once. Get over it. They won a title. LBJ was the Finals MVP. Now go somewhere and cry.

  15. jjones314 - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Cleveland fans, I get it. I understand all the LBJ/ Heat hatred. But everybody else let it go. Move on. Stop obsessing over everything Wade/ LBJ says and does. Face it. They won a title. LBJ was the Finals MVP. Get over it. Move on. Go somewhere and cry.

  16. bigwii - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:48 AM

I wonder if WoW is ever going to stop being a hypocrite and stop whining. He almost tore Rondo’s arm in half a couple years ago because Rondo was making him look bad and shutting him down that game. Last years All-Star game he broke Kobe’s nose, making fun of Dirk before getting whooped in the finals, or kicking someone in the groin none of those except the groin kick was a fine he should thank Stern because had he played in the NFL he would be fined and suspended for the first two. He’s always whining about something I’ve never seen a player whine as much as him. He expects every call to go his way when it doesn’t he’s arguing to the refs.

When he gets away with stuff and other players call him out he just has that arrogant smirk on his face seriously Wade needs to just stop all this hypocritical whining and just play. He’s been a huge drama queen ever since LeBron got there hes changes over the past few years its hard to respect him anymore.

    • 1heatedtoombrayduh - Mar 6, 2013 at 7:15 AM

You obviously dont watch all the other teams in the nba, show me a game where NO one complains to the refs..
ALL the players do it…and so what he made fun of dirk…AND???

    • craighsite - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Damn Lilwii! You’re really upset! Let me take a guess–You’re a Celtics fan! LMAFO. Get over Bro!

  17. riccismiles - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:53 PM

I guess the NBA’s answer is: Hitting a man with your hand is how MEN handle problems. Kicking with your feet or knees is just unacceptable! Next time Mr. WoW, use your fist!

    • jimeejohnson - Mar 6, 2013 at 9:15 PM

      Two words: Bruce Lee.

  18. daubs17 - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:56 PM

Does anyone else picture Lebron going home every night and having full blown conversations with himself and his 2 or 3 alter egos? Wade and Lebron crying on twitter like a couple of school girls about their money plights? omg these two are absurd

  19. t3chnician - Mar 6, 2013 at 1:58 PM

Criticizing the NBA officiating and front office decisions. That’s a fine and suspension for Lebron and Wade.

  20. michiganhockey11 - Mar 6, 2013 at 3:00 PM

A dude doesn’t hit another dude in the nuts except for 3 circumstances

1-about to die or get choked out
2-tried to do stuff with wife/girlfriend or family member
    3-talk crap about his kids
