Serge Ibaka hits Blake Griffin in the groin, and is somehow not ejected in Thunder’s win over Clippers (VIDEO)

Mar 3, 2013, 8:31 PM EST

With under two minutes remaining in a tight game between the Thunder and the Clippers, Serge Ibaka chopped down with his right arm and struck Blake griffin in the groin, causing Griffin to crumble to the floor.

There’s no doubt the act was intentional on Ibaka’s part, but the referees didn’t see it as an actual punch, only ruling it as a flagrant-one which meant that Ibaka was allowed to remain in the game.

Ibaka went on to draw Griffin’s sixth foul by converting a three-point play a few possessions later, meaning Griffin had fouled out and was done, while Ibaka got to stay in and contribute to his team’s victory during the game’s most meaningful possessions.

It’s possible that Ibaka’s intention was to chop away Griffin’s arm that was keeping him out of position, and it’s even likely that Ibaka wasn’t intending to catch Griffin where he did with that shot. But it landed nonetheless, and the referees should have ejected him for it.

We’ll see if the league reviews the play and determines it was more deserving of punishment than the referees did on the spot.

How that isn’t a flagrant 2, I don’t know. Ibaka is one of the game’s good guys, but fair is fair. He should be suspended for a couple of games.

    • pglive21 - Mar 3, 2013 at 11:07 PM

He’s not going to be suspended for 2 games if Will Bynum only got suspended for one for punching Hansbrough in the gut. I could see a one game suspension happening though as it was pretty intentional and malicious. Unfortunate because I never thought Ibaka was that kind of player.

        1 game per ball ?

One thing I love about these blogs is the stuff you guys imagine what “might have happened.” Television replays are pretty clear, however, and this creep needs at least one game off (without pay) to think about his actions.

    Ibaka is a real POS.

    • moseskkim - Mar 3, 2013 at 8:43 PM

was about to chop away at some precious man jewels.

    • chawbacon14 - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:18 PM

You owe Serge Ibaka, an apology.

    • aqzi - Mar 3, 2013 at 11:35 PM

All the author was saying with that line was that Ibaka might have been aiming for Griffin’s arm rather than his groin. The author clearly indicates he thought Ibaka’s punch/swing/action was intentional and suspension-worthy, just that he might have been aiming for the arm rather than a more sensitive area.

  3. cakemixa - Mar 3, 2013 at 8:40 PM

Blake Griffin flopping? Color me shocked.

    • moseskkim - Mar 3, 2013 at 8:47 PM

1st “flopping” has dramatically gone down league wide including blake. 2nd ibaka chopped hard at griffins crotch. i dunno if he intended to hit that specific area 100% but whatever the case, you cant do that crap. id like to see you get hit there and react any different.

      • chawbacon14 - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:58 PM

Griffin never got hit in the crotch, Ibaka’s hand landed on top of Griffin’s thigh

  4. sf49ers4 - Mar 3, 2013 at 8:42 PM

I guess you all missed Griffin grabbing Ibaka and holding him which is why he chopped Griffin’s arm.

    • kylos13 - Mar 3, 2013 at 10:38 PM

Are you kidding? You can clearly see Ibaka holding Griffins wrist thoughout the whole replay before he lets go and goes for the chop on Griffin’s sack. Ibaka is not the nice guy people seem to think he is.

      • chawbacon14 - Mar 3, 2013 at 11:18 PM

And you can not see Griffin holding Serge’s jersey ?

Dang man, are you blind ??

Serge is trying to get Griffin’s hand off his jersey. Or is that not allowed ? The NBA rules say Griffin can hold a jersey and the player can’t react ?

  5. reasonablemindsays - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:00 PM

Ibaka got tired of Blake’s flopping so he gave him a reason to flop

  6. mrlaloosh - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:12 PM

I think it’s Suh’s fault and the Saints bounty program. I have 50,000 pages of evidence. Pretty obvious to me.

” It’s possible that Ibaka’s intention was to chop away Griffin’s arm that was keeping him out of position, ”

Obviously, you people need glasses !!

Griffin has hold of Ibaka’s jersey, and its stretched clear around Ibaka’s body, and Serge is trying to get Blake loose of his jersey so he can rebound.

See Pic here, look at Serge’s #9 !!! How in the world can you not see that ???

Griffin plays dirty, he grabs and holds and pushes the whole game.

  8. chawbacon14 - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:17 PM

Griffin is pulling Serge down !!

Can no one else see that ??

Surely Hubie Brown can’t , he’s so old he’s blind as a bat, and I guess Turico DID NOT WANT to see Ibaka’s jersey.

No wonder Griffin gets so many RB’s, he cheats like a banshee !! And the refs are blind also.

    • mytthor - Mar 4, 2013 at 12:01 AM

What the hell is an RB? Did And what does “cheats like a banshee” mean?

      • jrose606 - Mar 4, 2013 at 12:56 AM

        Two things…

Chad has a point in that in the video it is clear that Griffin was pulling Ibaka’s jersey from the release of the shot, but as this happens in every game, probably every possession, the appropriate response is not a karate chop to the sack or any where for that matter.

And RB obviously means rebounds. Not sure how a banshee cheats though. And if Griffin wasn’t having similar fouls, shirt grabbing, pushing, etc., committed against him he would probably have more rebounds than he does now in a “clean” game, the man can jump.

        One thing

Ibaka was not aiming for Griffins crotch, he was using his forearm on Griffins forearm, to free himself so he could get a ” rebound ” .

It was not his intent to injure or hurt Griffin, it was his intent to get loose of Griffin’s foul.

  9. ranoversquarells - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:21 PM

    Griffins pennis flopped …

  10. stephenolszewski - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:22 PM

Blake was complaining and flipping the whole second half so I can see how that can get a bit frustrating

  11. chawbacon14 - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:39 PM

Serge is hitting Grifins arm, to break Griffin loose of Serge’s jersey

2 seconds tells it all, it was a hit on Griffin’s outstretched arm that had a grip on Serge’s jersey.

    Your apologies will be accepted

  12. iamjimmyjack - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:39 PM

Thunder are a dirty team filled with fake tough guys…Westbrook yells at the crowd after every made basket. Perkins is a waste of space and gives everyone dirty looks, and Ibaka, when his face isn’t in the opposing players nutsack, is low blowing the opponent. What a team. Great way to lose out of state fans. I used to really enjoy watching them play. They still are great obviously, but their personalities are a bit much.

    • chawbacon14 - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:43 PM

      You’re a joke bwahahaha

    • jimmymarlinsfan - Mar 3, 2013 at 11:50 PM

This. The Thunder are full of cry babies who toss around false allegations all the while doing things like punching people in the nuts

    • jolink653 - Mar 4, 2013 at 11:28 AM

Yeah, excuse them for playing with some intensity and a little attitude…How dare they play this game in a tough, physical manner and get pumped up when they make big shots, and what can Perkins be thinking by trying to be intimidating down low?

Fake tough guys? I don’t understand the reference because they never back down from anyone; in fact, they get in each other’s faces as much as they do other people’s faces, so I’m not sure what that is supposed to mean…When have you seen them back down to anyone?

And I’m not defending Ibaka: I’m an OKC fan and I thought that was a dirty play, but he never does things like that and I’m not gonna go crazy about it, and for what it’s worth, Blake Griffin was going down like he got shot every time someone bumped him so I can understand the frustration with it

    • trollaikman8 - Mar 4, 2013 at 3:39 PM

Funny how Perkins and Ibaka back down when Mehta World War is in a fighting stance.

  13. chawbacon14 - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:41 PM

    Griffin is a cheat.

  14. BigBeachBall - Mar 3, 2013 at 9:51 PM

ibaka was expecting blake’s arm to be there and it wasn’t… kinda like “pulling the chair out”

  15. jessethegreat - Mar 3, 2013 at 10:02 PM

Not that I condone this kind of action, but If any player in the NBA today deserved it, it’s FLAKE FLOPPIN.

Raise the net a foot and see how great Flake is. Only thing he’s got is the dunks. And the Cheapness!

    • chawbacon14 - Mar 3, 2013 at 10:13 PM

yeah griffin deserved it , because he had an illegal grip on Ibaka’s jersey.

Ibaka is using his forearm to beat Griffins hand off his jersey.

This is soooo obvious. Only homer Clipper fans can not see what’s happening.

How can Griffin get away with holding jersey’s ? Is he protected by the league and the refs ??

Incredible how much the guy cheats . If he played by the rules, he would be an average player.

      • mytthor - Mar 4, 2013 at 12:02 AM

Dude. Did Griffin sleep with your wife or something?

      • chawbacon14 - Mar 4, 2013 at 8:56 AM

To Mythor, Dude ………….. I’m an OU fan who watched every college game Blake Griffin played. He plays dirty and he’s very good at it. He cheats. I’ve seen it a lot longer than you have.

You can not hold another player down by his jersey.

      • mytthor - Mar 4, 2013 at 10:57 PM

First of all, how do you know how often I’ve watched Blake Griffin? Secondly, yes, you can’t hold another player down by his jersey…except every single player in the NBA does it 20 times per game. A lot less than guys get hit in the nuts.

Hey, I think Griffin is a ridiculous, posturing, fake tough guy flopper. I just don’t think him getting slapped in the balls is a good example of it. And I don’t take it personally. Woosah, my man.

  18. decimusprime - Mar 3, 2013 at 11:05 PM

Raise the rim up a foot and Must See BG will still dunk on everyone, you know most of his dunks, his head is above the rim. An 11ft rim is nothing to him.

  19. stayhigh_247 - Mar 4, 2013 at 12:23 AM

    “no kids for you!” chop!!

  20. fnc111 - Mar 4, 2013 at 5:25 AM

It’s not shocking he stayed in the game the league is run by Vegas … He leaves then the thunder lose

  21. davidly - Mar 4, 2013 at 5:33 AM

    1) Griffin was grabbing Ibaka, so Ibaka removed Griffin’s offending hand.
    2) Griffin fought the removal of his offending hand, so Ibaka chopped at him.
    3) Whether Ibaka meant to hit his arm or his testicles is immaterial because,
    4) we can tell that he didn’t make contact with his testes based upon…
    5) …Griffin’s flopping.

    Conclusions:
    1) Griffin should be assessed a flagrant for initiating contact that led to a flagrant.
    2) Griffin should be fined for flopping.
    3) Ibaka should have to tour kindergartens telling kids to stay in school and join the military when they graduate so that they can carry out the orders of the Tuesday kill list on kindergarteners in other countries.

You may all go comment on the other posts now.

  22. gintfan - Mar 4, 2013 at 9:23 AM

Ibaka is a dirty player and he was aiming for Blake’s balls. Hey there is fighting going on below the rim on every game, even in the WNBA, but what Ibaka did can not and should not be condoned. Plain and simple it was plain dirty. Stop defending it.

  23. tmhofficial - Mar 4, 2013 at 10:47 AM

    Ibaka ain’t about dis life!
