OJ Mayo reminds me of Joe Johnson. These guys have all the POTENTIAL in the world !

And when they are playing against guys, where their talent is CLEARLY superior...they show you how much POTENTIAL they have.

However....when they play against guys where the talent is equal or their opponent is more talented (as in this case)......they TOTALLY DISAPPEAR AND DON"T EVEN TRY !

Mayo was "SELF-CHECKED" the entire game! He couldn't dribble, he forgot how to throw a simple bounce pass, he couldn't make a lay-up and he didn't even play tough defense !

I mean, I respect guys like John Stockton because he was NEVER the most athletic or talented player on the floor.....BUT you were not going to out hustle him and he wasn't gonna back down from a challenge.

Conversely...the heart Stockton had as a player is absent in OJ Mayo and Joe Johnson.....total PONKS in the face of a challenge.

You hear everyone talk about his footwork, but for the uninitiated (fans, announcers, writers, posters) it doesn't really mean anything b/c they don't know what they're looking for. Let me help, the guy comes off of a delayed wheel route-handoff (nice play btw) stops on a dime, get his feet set (left-right for a right handed jump shooter), balances up and goes straight up and down into a jump shot. Pure tradecraft.

BTW, I knew instantly that Kurt didn't write these last two passages about the Lakers, as subversive, undermining shots aren't being taken at the team within the text of the passage.
