How much money would you give Andrew Bynum this summer?
The bigger question is, how many years?
Fortunately Sixers’ GM Toni DiLeo, and other GMs around the league, don’t have to answer that question until this summer. And they hope to have seen him play a little before that.
Whatever the answers to those first two questions are, the plan in Philly is to keep Bynum, DiLeo told John Finger at CSNPhilly.com.
“We have Plan A and I think everyone knows what A stands for. And we have Plan B and we don’t know,” general manager Tony DiLeo said on Friday morning at the Sixers’ workout site at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
“If and when we get our complete team on the floor, then we can get some answers. We want to evaluate all of our players and in the summer make some decisions. We have some flexibility, we have a lot of free agents, we have a lot of good, young players and an All-Star point guard that we can build around. We have a lot of options and a lot of different ways we can go this summer.”
DiLeo added the question isn’t how good a player Bynum is; the question is can he play? Can he stay healthy and get on the floor to help the team enough to warrant the paychecks?
Fans are going to flip when it happens, but you can expect Bynum to get the max. Is that paying him for potential? Yes. But that’s what happens with the handful of legitimate centers in the league.
But how many years are you willing to bet on? That to me is the interesting question.
