Yeah, I didn’t thumb you down, but…

You’re right that Shumpert and Brooks are both young guards on their rookie deals with potential, and young players + draft picks are what a team like the Hawks is looking for in exchange for Josh Smith.

However, there’s a big difference between Kris Humphries and Amar’e Stoudamire.
Humphries is a worse player, but he’s only under contract for 1 more year. So if the Hawks get Humphries, they get a contributor who is overpaid but is off the books in 2014 (and can be packaged in future trades as an expiring contract, which NBA teams covet).

Amar’e is playing well right now, but his contract is enormous, and he’s still considered a tremendous injury-risk. So with your proposed trade, instead of a guy on a moderately-priced, short-term deal (Humphries), the Hawks would be getting a guy on an expensively-priced, long-term deal (Stoudamire).

That’s not what a rebuilding team is looking for.

The issue is the Nets have to throw in a guy with a comparable salary to Josh Smith to make the trade work, since they’re far above the luxury-tax line.

So it’d have to be Kris Humphries + Marshon Brooks or perhaps Gerald Wallace + Brooks + Reggie Evans.

If I’m the Hawks, while I wouldn’t love getting Kris Humphries, at the very least, he’s an expiring contract next year.
Wallace and Evans have multiple years left on their deals, which a team like the Hawks wouldn’t want since they’re in the middle of a rebuild centered around Al Horford and Jeff Teague.

So the incentives are Brooks (young guard on his rookie deal) and 1st round pick.

And as Kurt writes, maybe the Hawks can trade Humphries and his expiring deal after this season.

I didn’t vote you down but I think I get it . Amare is sitting on the bench with an absurd contract & Shumpert is injured . Amare’s contract , for better or worse , won’t be touched by Ferry .

Really wanting the filthy Hawk to snag Larry Sanders instead of Ersan Ilyasova but not seeing the deer biting .

Why would Knicks need 2 people who play same position melo n smith wouldn’t work.

Hawks lucky Sumone throws in a 1st rd pick beggers can’t be choosy. Either keep him now n just have the cap space in summer. U can still do sign n trade if wants max money otherwise he will lose that 5 yr n what 20 mill it’s hawks move.

The fact that humphries is paid so much is actually a good thing for the hawks. a $12 million expiring contract is a valuable asset either as a trade chip or for the hawks if they want to clear up cap space for the following year

if they think they will lose Smith in Free agency I would absolutely do this deal. I have a feeling the filthy Hawks have multiple options . As a lover of the dirty Hawk really liked the idea of a Spencer Hawes , Evan Turner for Smoove trade but I guess Philly nixed it . I’m starting to think the Monta Ellis & Ersan Ilyasova for Smoove trade is in play as well .

I think those are the legit two offers on the table . I expect the silly Nets to pony up more .

I wouldn’t make that deal with the Nets if I were the Hawks GM. What would I want with an overpaid, low production player like Humphries? They would have to sweeten the pot, and keep Humphries out of the mix altogether.

In my opinion, the fact that Humphries is owed so much next season is a good thing. He’s obviously not worth $12 million, but a $12 million expiring contract will be a valuable asset either as a trading chip or if the hawks want to free up some cap for the following year. I also think Marshon brooks can develop into a quality starter at the 2 if given more minutes.
