Well, I just haven’t seen very many white guys in the slam dunk contest and the only legit one was Rick Barry; the last dude was ok. It’s not about being racist, it’s about being a realist. By the way, when Jayson Williams first came on the scene in with Kings, I think the white coach(es) made him tone down his game because it looked too funky; and they eventually reduced him to a very boring player to watch. Yeah he won a ring but they did not let him be a star. I think that was abstractly racist.

Yeah, you meant guys of a certain race have an opinion about something that doesn’t matter because of their race. Let’s assume for a second that white people can’t dunk as well as black people, that’s a stereotype but certainly one based in fact. But why exactly does that mean they can’t judge dunks? Dunk contests are about how good the dunks look and entertain, not about how technically difficult they are. People who can’t dunk have as much right to have an opinion on how entertaining a dunk is as people who can.

Dunk contest is a joke. The best dunks are always the in game dunks on context of real competition.

somekat – You either forgotten some basketball or you’re cherrypicking facts. JR Rider was a pretty good basketball player for a few years in the mid to late 90s. Pretty sure he won rookie of the year and he may of made an all-star team. But what is most important is after JR won it, Kobe won it so the idea that he, Minor, and Sky Walker didn’t compete against stars is wrong. Sky Walker was in the dunk contest in like 1988 or 89, stars still took place then. Harold Minor nickname Baby Jordan, experts thought he was the next Jordan until he flamed out. He flamed out but he wasn’t a nobody. If you watch the NBA regularly then you should know who these guys are.

I disagree that it has been irrelevant.

However, Iggy did get robbed like hell. I mean, they gave him the win and then changed the a 10 to a 9 randomly. Definitely another sketchy move by the NBA.

no, they were the best after the stars stopped taking part. When I think best ever in the dunk contest, I think MJ. Or Dominique “the human highlight reel” Wilkins, etc etc.

The guys you mentioned are within the last 20 years, since the starts stopped taking part, and that is exactly my point. We’re watching guys that can’t even score double digits a night a lot of times. Who cares if they are the most athletic.

Give me LeBron, Durant, Griffin and a few other stars, and maybe I’ll consider watching again. Although I doubt it

I played with James in high school and middle school. He has ALWAY’S had HOP’S like that. I’m not much into beating but if I was. I’d bet on James!!! He is CRAZY athletic!!

Gerald Green and James White might not hold the name power of most stars, but they are pretty clearly the two best dunkers in the NBA. Think back, some of the best dunkers were Harold Miner, JR Rider, Kenny Walker and Desmond Mason… hardly stars.

dunk contest has been irrlivant since the robbed Iggy (with one of the best dunks i’ve EVER seen) to give it to Nate Robinson (with a weak “jump over spud webb” dunk that he hardly made)
