Lakers’ World Peace suspended game for punch; Dwight Howard also out vs. Nets

Feb 5, 2013, 12:29 PM EST

Down two starters, this could be a rough night for the Los Angeles Lakers in Brooklyn. Not sure we’ll see a lot of facilitator Kobe Bryant in this one.

Metta World Peace has been suspended one game by the NBA for throwing a punch that struck Detroit’s Brandon Knight in the jaw when the two teams faced off on Sunday. You can see the video above — Knight was trying to get rebounding position and was pushing with World Peace when the two got tangled up. But then MWP slips in a slight left to the jaw. Not an all-out punch but enough of one after the whistle had blown to get him ejected.

When you saw the video, you knew the suspension was coming. Missing one game costs him about $66,000 in salary. He will be out Tuesday night when the Lakers face the Nets in Brooklyn.

The Lakers also will be without Dwight Howard, who told reporters his shoulder is not well enough to play, tweets Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times.

That will mean Pau Gasol starts at center but the Lakers will be lacking depth on the wing (and a good defender) against a quality team from the East that needs some wins.

Good. It’s about time they start keeping him on a shorter leash.

    • conjecture101 - Feb 5, 2013 at 2:22 PM

yea lets make sure the league is wholesome enough for acdc363 to watch. We don’t want any physical play to intimidate our innocent fans.

What MWP did to Knight is what happens to D12 every night. Stop being hypocritical NBA. A foul is a foul no matter who it is on. It’s turning into jungle ball.

That’s it? With his history it should be at least 2 games.

That’s weak. There should have been no suspension. That was not an intentional “hit”, or whatever you wanna call that. He was tangled up and caught him unintentially with a limp wrist.

    • slowclyde86 - Feb 5, 2013 at 1:30 PM

Wait, what? MWP is “tangled up” because his hand is behind BK’s head not letting him go, at which time he brings up his hand into BK’s jaw. What video did you watch? Punishment was way too light on this one.

      • conjecture101 - Feb 5, 2013 at 2:25 PM

watch a video of any nba game from the 80’s and you will see that play happen nearly every possession. Unfortunately we have to make the league an AAU camp for people like you.

      • tubal22 - Feb 5, 2013 at 7:13 PM

I don’t think he threw a punch, but he was definitely in the wrong for having his hand around his neck not letting him go. If someone had me wrapped up like that I probably would have thrown a punch.

I think he’s getting a suspension because of who he is, and he deserves it.

If it was someone else I don’t think they’d have been suspended.

      • slowclyde86 - Feb 6, 2013 at 7:51 AM

You are so right Conjecture. The nba really IS better when players can hold opponents heads in place then punch them. Ah, those were the days.

His past history comes into play on this.
That and he is an out and out lunatic.

L.A. doesn’t win this game WITH Artest and Howard anyway.

      Hargis?

  6. freemantowilliams - Feb 5, 2013 at 1:29 PM

Wtf is wrong with this dude. You do that stuff in the wrong neighborhood it’ll get you shot. C’mon man holding the dude by his necks. Artest is gonna be one of those dudes that’s not gonna make it after basketball.

    • conjecture101 - Feb 5, 2013 at 2:28 PM

Do you know where Ron Artest comes from? Queensbridge New York. One of the roughest neighborhoods in the entire region.

      • thenmoveback - Feb 5, 2013 at 4:40 PM

So what does that mean? That when he does it on the street in NY someone will shoot him Instead of walking away like intelligent ppl do? MWP is an idiot plan and simply. Not a bad ball player thou just stupid really stupid.

When will this tool change his name back. He is the antithesis of “world peace”.

    • jimeejohnson - Feb 5, 2013 at 9:11 PM

That’s why I call him Metta World War!

  9. BigBeachBall - Feb 5, 2013 at 5:19 PM

knight blocked artest out like a champ… then World Peace remembered who he was….

  10. paulhargis53 - Feb 5, 2013 at 6:18 PM

Uff. Imagine that, lakers fans not giving an inch when its blatantly obvious to the rest of the world that he should be fined and suspended.

Thanks for proving to me again why I detest your fanbase.

    • jimeejohnson - Feb 5, 2013 at 9:12 PM

      Hargis!

    • Foul Dwimmerlaik - Feb 5, 2013 at 10:21 PM

You and your stupid sweeping statements.

If I followed your logic, I would have agreed with some Europeans when they say that them Yanks are a bunch of clueless egocentric people.

      But I’m not stupid.

      Nor am I egocentric.

  11. Foul Dwimmerlaik - Feb 5, 2013 at 8:06 PM

No excuses for Metta. His right hand continued to stay on Knight’s nape… which is mitigating to believe that there was the intention for that open hand undercut.

  12. bengzki - Feb 5, 2013 at 8:55 PM

Artest (World Peace) + Detroit = Well we know what to expect.
