Lakers’ World Peace, Kobe make least-liked athletes list

Feb 5, 2013, 6:31 PM EDT

Los Angeles Lakers' Bryant smiles after making a free throw while Peace comes towards him during their NBA basketball game against Brooklyn Nets in Los Angeles Reuters

As a professional athlete right now, you don’t really want to end up on a list with Lance Armstrong and Manti Te’o — the public has turned on them.

But two Lakers joined them on Forbes Magazine’s list of the least popular athletesMetta World Peace and Kobe Bryant. Well, it’s not Forbes list, was put together by the Nielsen Sports and market research firm E-Poll based on national polls.

Nonetheless, World Peace comes in fifth on the list with just 21 percent favorability. Lower than Alex Rodriguez and Michael Vick. Even though for the last few years World Peace been on his best behavior… well, he is suspended Tuesday for punching Brandon Knight but in general he’s been a pretty good citizen in recent years.

Kobe came in 10th with 27 percent favorability. He remains one of the most polarizing figures in the NBA — he’s respected more for his game now than he was five years ago, but the general public has never warmed to him.

Those were the only two in the top 10, which goes to show how much a title and a gold medal has changed the perceptions of LeBron James. Also on the list last year was Kris Humphries after his marriage to Kim Kardashian, but thankfully most people have moved on from that freak show.

    I love world peace.

but the QB don’t stand for no quarterback.”

i dont understand how so many ppl hate kobe. Im far from a lakers fan. But you cant hate on him for simply being more talented than everyone. He isnt the most humble person in the world. He puts his swag on display for sure. But when he talks he backs it up. Every time

Say what you do and do what you say

        Amnesia is rampant….What about-

        1. Committing criminal acts against women
        2. Getting caught in an adulterous affair and snitching on your co-workers
        3. Career locker-room cancer

That will give you something to start with

        Surrounded by midget-brains

      • eventhorizon04 - Feb 5, 2013 at 11:59 PM

For the general public, the dislike most likely stems from widely publicized rape allegations.

progress2011, you are such an ignorant doofus (hmmm… I think that was a redundant phrase).

I agree with number two as both counts were proven.

…no crime was committed against any woman involving Kobe as he wasn’t convicted.

So who’s the midget-brain now, nematode?

Oh yeah, I forgot. You are definitely not midget-brained. Mea culpa.

        Nematodes don’t have brains.

Re #1- Kobe never committed a criminal act against that woman ! they had consensual sex that she later tried to get money for. when he declined she made up the rape !
Re #2- at least 50% of the people that dont like kobe because of that indiscretion have cheated before themselves, and I hear people say all the time that”Kobe snitched on Shaq to the police” miss me with that ! Shaq is the police ! in case you forgot !
Re #3- Career locker room cancer ? Kobe has 5 campionship rings and made it to 2 other championships, all defensive first team 12 times, #4 career scorer and will finish #3, 14 time all star, 4 time all star MVP, 1 time league MVP (he was screwed out of 2 others), and the list goes on !

How many times do you think Dwight hit refresh to vote?

    • davidly - Feb 6, 2013 at 6:59 AM

If so, I’m sure he could just pay somebody else the cash to clear the cache.

  3. rickyspanish - Feb 5, 2013 at 6:44 PM

I want a list of writers and bloggers least liked by people. I have a few nominees.

  4. hojo20 - Feb 5, 2013 at 7:01 PM

How about a blog on players other than LAL or Miami……like the Bucks, Pacers, Jazz.

    • Kurt Helin - Feb 5, 2013 at 7:42 PM

You want some Pacers on a least liked list?

    • cosanostra71 - Feb 5, 2013 at 8:04 PM

4 of the 5 most commented articles on this site right now are about the Lakers or Heat. You now know why there are a lot of posts about them.

  5. fruitcovejag - Feb 5, 2013 at 8:09 PM

Lol tannethrill! Otherwise I wouldn’t understand how Dwight Howard was not on that list.

  6. drunkenjunk - Feb 5, 2013 at 9:19 PM

can’t believe wade wasn’t on this.

  7. Jeff - Feb 5, 2013 at 10:36 PM

Queen James still tops my list.

    • mytthor - Feb 5, 2013 at 11:15 PM

But I thought his nickname was King James?

Oh wait, I see what you did there. Might want to tone down the wit a little — sometimes it’s just too hard to expect us regular people to keep up with that kind of comedic genius.

  8. badintent - Feb 5, 2013 at 11:51 PM

Poor AI can’t make roster, can’t make this list.

  9. kavika6 - Feb 6, 2013 at 3:21 AM

I can’t believe Manti Te’o is on the list. “Least amount of common sense” list maybe but anyone that hates him doesn’t know the full story.

  10. ebrownwareagle - Feb 6, 2013 at 8:45 AM

Sooo, Kobe didn’t get CONVICTED but he’s guilty. And Ben did TWICE and he is not guilty… Gotcha @ progres

  11. chrmngblly - Feb 6, 2013 at 11:45 AM

Who cares? I say if you are in a sport that requires toughness to win, these are guys everyone would kill to have on their team. If only Dwight would take off his clown suit, he could get on this list.

  12. dt58 - Feb 6, 2013 at 1:56 PM

Really? You need to on this list to be a winner? What a sad state our society is in if that’s what you believe. Guys like Kobe aren’t on this list because of what they do on the court. There still are some things money can’t buy and respect is one of them
