Caron Butler tricks Jonas Valanciunas, gets a steal at end of Clippers blowout loss to Raptors (VIDEO)

Feb 2, 2013, 12:10 AM EDT

The Clippers essentially didn’t bother to show up Friday night in Toronto, falling behind by as many as 31 points before eventually losing 98-73.

Caron Butler shot just 3-of-12 from the field in 37 minutes, which may explain why he attempted to trick Jonas Valanciunas into getting one more chance to score as the clock was winding down, and after both teams had a tacit agreement that the game was in the books.

As Valanciunas crosses half court and terminates his dribble, Butler approaches him and offers up a friendly, sportsmanlike handshake. Once the Raptors rookie relaxes and accepts, Butler grabs the ball and heads down the floor on the break, before he’s caught from behind and fouled with 2.8 seconds to play.

The Clippers were down 27 points at the time.

This is more hilarious than it is infuriating, because with the only thing at stake being Butler’s personal statistics, he’s entitled to keep playing until the final buzzer sounds. I guess. I mean, no one got hurt, and the final outcome remained unchanged.

If anyone is going to be upset at Butler’s antics, it’s likely to be his own teammates. Extending a humiliating loss longer than necessary isn’t likely to sit well in the locker room or with the team’s head coach.

At least it shouldn’t.

LOL at the cut to Blake.

      Lol.

For the first time ever, the camera man’s decision to swing to the biggest star instead of showing viewers what *appeared* to be good sportsmanship between 2 less well-known players cost him a chance at a potentially viral clip.

Butler shaking Valanciunas hand, patting him on the shoulder, and then stealing the ball would have been played ad-nauseum on all the sports networks. Oh well.

    That was funny

This is like you and your buddy calling timeouts in 2K so you can get the last shot.

This is… so dumb. Butler, you’re just dumb. Brett said it best, why would you draw this game out?

    • dacapt704 - Feb 2, 2013 at 8:18 AM

Lighten up…it was funny and no one got hurt. So what it added an extra minute to the game? When will we ever see that again? I enjoyed it..might as well leave a blowout with a smile

      • dko83 - Feb 2, 2013 at 2:06 PM

I’m light enough, this is still really dumb. Who’s smiling? Not even sure Butler is smiling after this.

        Lighten up?
Jonas shoulda hard fouled him onto the floor for his bush league crap.

Hehe let’s see now who s gonna high five Butler again in these situations. No one likes to be on the fool side of such jokes. I just hope he is not a trend setter…

  6. fruitcovejag - Feb 2, 2013 at 12:48 PM

Did he laugh this off post-game and admit to a brain fart? If so lol. If not, it’s definitely the biggest bush league moment of the year. For 2 points when losing by 27?!?! Is that the D-league you’re playing in Caron?

  7. nygdriveforfive - Feb 2, 2013 at 2:18 PM

bush league move by a vet who should know better.

  8. metalhead65 - Feb 2, 2013 at 2:21 PM

congrats you lost by 25 and not 27 happy now? you may think you made a rookie look bad but you are only one looking bad. after this you better not be in the news for whining about another team running the score up on the clippers. I would hope opponents would be pressing and shooting 3′s against your team from here on it untill the very end of the game. simply a bush league play that is not finny in any way. let’s see you try that when the game is still in doubt and see who is laughing then.

  9. misterchainbluelightning - Feb 2, 2013 at 3:24 PM

Stern should fine the Clippers for not showing up

i laughed so hard at this. like that was the most unexpected thing ever.

I’m a Raptors fan and I’m not even remotely offended by this. It’s just too silly and ridiculous to even get angry about. Was it unsportsmanlike? Kind of, but in a weird way it transcends that and enters the realm of hilarious instead. I mean, how can you really get mad when a guy made a conscious decision to get himself on Sportscenter’s NOT Top 10?

    Hilarious

Funny and Bush League…..Is that possible?

  14. megaballer23 - Feb 3, 2013 at 8:29 AM

I am not sure what the hell he was thinking. After the raps do the sportsman thing and let the clock run without taking a shot this moron does this. The big rookie should have fouled him hard.

  15. zacksdad - Feb 4, 2013 at 12:26 PM

This is bush league. If Jonas would have pretended to stop playing and then tried to score, people would be crying about running up the score. The Clippers true colors is tarting to come out. They do not have CP3 to show them the way real players act.
