This guys ego wont allow him to enter, if he loses to a bunch of no names he looks like a tool.
The only way he enters if he can stack the deck, put Wade, his agent and his boys from his high school team on the judging panel. He cant stack the deck like he did running to Miami.

Yeah, the best players used to compete int he dunk contest, but the best PLAYERS are no longer the best DUNKERS. The best players have learned to improve on their other skills. The best dunkers are the guys who made the league on sheer athleticism and have few other talents. A few players break that mold, but they’re exceptions – not rules. LeBron – great in-game dunker – not many “dunk contest style tricks” though. I’m glad not to see him embarrass himself.

The games greats have moved on to precise skills (Lebron, Carmelo, Love, etc.).
The non-greats are the dunkers (DeMar Derozan)
And a few do both (Griffin, Wade, etc.)

The time that LeBron might have been in the dunk contest has long since past. Not only that, but comparisons to past years are irrelevant because it is a different era. Stars simply don’t enter the slam dunk contest- have we seen Durant, Wade, Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, ANY under 30 stars participate WHEN THEY WERE ALREADY STARS? No.

Part of it is that we are numbed by the feats of athleticism that have now become routine. Does anybody remember Serge Ibaka basically recreating the Dr. J/ Air Jordan foul line dunk a few years back? That barely raised an eyebrow. It’s more about jumping over Kia’s and trying to dunk three balls at once now. I agree with whoever suggested an all-star game of HORSE or 21. Pick players from the all-star/3-point/skills rosters, and that would be great.

As a fan, of course I think it would be entertaining to see the game’s biggest stars give it a go. But as a Heat fan, I would hope LeBron has better things to do. Like it or not, the dunk contest isn’t what it used to be and LeBron isn’t the only one sitting out. Like @1972 said, what happens in-game on a nightly basis gets me out of my seat more than any dunk contest move ever could.

Didn’t he say he held “The Decision” to raise money for charity (The Boys and Girls Club of America)? If that really was the reason he held it then this is another way to do the same thing with much less of a backlash at the end. If that really was the reason that is. I’m just sayin.

Because the dunk contest is tired and old. All the possible ways for a player to throw a ball through a hoop have been done, ad nauseum, and all the gimmicks added to complicate it have only served to expose how gimmicky they all are.

The dunk contest only exists because it serves two purposes: A) to let non-star NBA player try and make a name for themselves, and B) to give the NBA’s corporate sponsors yet another opportunity to include their products in the event.

“Star” players no longer need the publicity, and don’t want to risk the perceived loss of status by some obscure player out-dunking them. Consider Blake Griffin. He won the contest last year, but has now made the leap to “star”. He’ll never be in another dunk contest. Ever. Nor will any other NBA “star”. There’s nothing to be gained when you already have the endorsement deals.

Want to see LeBron perform multiple highlight worthy dunks? Just watch him night after night. Not only is it a dunk-a-thin, but he’s also killing it in the skills competition, every night.

And when LeBron’s dunking, it’s not over an idle car. It’s over NBA power forwards who are the best in the world at trying to stop him.

And in his skills competition, he’s not dribbling and passing through cones. He’s doing it through NBA defenses designed solely to try to stop him.

The Dunk Contest is so far beneath him it’s not worthy of a second of his time. Hell, the Dunk Contest is even a waste of YOUR time.

look he either does it because his minions want him to or he doesn’t but no way in hell I or anybody with any sense would donate money to his charity when he makes as much as he does. he can fund it on his own,use some of that nike endorsement money if the charity needs funding. yes I know he did not ask for it, this is for the idiots who actually thinks he cares about what you want and are stupid enough to donate to a charity he can fund for years by doing 1 commercial and donating his pay from it.

Back in the day all the best players used to be in it. Jordan, Drexler, Olajuwon, Wilkins, and even Kobe. There needs to be some way to get the star players do join the contest so we don’t have to watch the bench players. I remember watching MJ vs Wilkins in the finals like 3 years straight and how serious they were about beating one another. Get it back to that level of competition.

The charity part is a great idea, but screw Lebron if he doesnt wanna do it. Hes proven that off the court hes very selfish and really could care less about the general public. Just ask the fans in Cleveland.
