***here is why i always thought off-the-backboard catches and finishes were legal, without even taking a look at the official ruling of it.

to me, just like when the ball hits off of a referee, the ball is considered deflected and still in play. the backboard acts in the same manner. when you pass it off the backboard, i consider that to be a deflection, which is why i don’t believe you get an assist to yourself on the play.

the backboard is in bounds, so when you deflect the ball off of it, you are still legally able to go up and finish in the air.
