Watch Jose Calderon carve up the Lakers “defense” (VIDEO)

Jan 21, 2013, 9:41 AM EDT

If you want to know why the Lakers are five games below .500, watch their defense in these highlights from their loss to Toronto Sunday.

The temptation is to say that of course Jose Calderon had his way with the Lakers perimeter players, Steve Nash was guarding him. And Calderon has some success against him. But watch the highlights and notice a bunch of these are against Kobe Bryant. Also notice how when he gets in the lane the Lakers big men rotate over to cut off his drives (usually) but nobody helps the helper much.

The Lakers defensive rotations are a mess and if you are a smart point guard like Calderon you can make them pay because of it. He did. The Raptors won. Deservedly.

I only saw Kobe play bad once in that clip, when he swiped at the ball twice and missed both swipes..they need to package poo gasoo and old man Nash for sumthin…a legit pg like Nash Kant play with Kobe bcuz kobe needs the rock to do his work…not knocking his game or nethin..LeBron and wade also wudnt b able to play with a PG like Nash dwill cp3 etc bcuz the dominate the ball..

I can understand the Lakers big men being a little reluctant to pick up the guard, since (a) they know there’s no defensive rotation behind them, (b) if they get too close, the little guard is going to blow right past them, and (c) if they play team defense, they’re going to catch hell for “their guy” getting backdoor points.

makes you wonder what they are thinking when D’Antoni draws up these whack defensive schemes.

Coach Phil” Just copy the Cippers O ya fool ! Lob City!”
