Tracy McGrady having none of Kobe’s one-on-one story

Yesterday we told you how Kobe Bryant said he was a one-on-one basketball god who could beat anyone, and that included him thrashing Tracy McGrady back in the day.

I played T-Mac. I cooked him. Roasted him. Wasn’t even close. Ask him, he’ll tell you.

Well, someone did. Word got halfway around to the globe to China (where McGrady plays now) pretty fast and T-Mac isn’t exactly backing Kobe Bryant’s version of events.

So did Kobe and T-Mac once play one-on-one? Or was this a hoax, the kind of game Manti Te’o’s girlfriend could have refereed?

Depends on who you want to believe.

And honestly, do you care who is the better one-on-one player? I suppose there is some macho “I’m better than you” allure, but a lot of the keys to winning basketball — passing skills, game recognition, help defense — go out the window in one-on-one. So what’s the big deal with being that great at it? Aside feeding your ego, Kobe.

    I believe Kobe.
What has T-Mac ever done, waste of talent.

    • loungefly74 - Jan 18, 2013 at 1:31 PM

thank you! (good god…seems like a lot of people are on crazy pills here at PBT)

holy crap, people…T-Mac (along with Starbury and Stevie Franchise) was one of the most overrated players…EVER!
his team was better when he was not in the line-up! and this is not on some small sample, he missed a lot of games.
i dont know what else to say. i have done the “T-Mac sucks” rants several times already on PBT throughout the years…

well…i guess the obvious question would be to know if Kobe and T-Mac were ever in Europe together…

      • aboogy123456 - Jan 18, 2013 at 3:25 PM

If anything T-Mac was underrated. People look back on his career and think he sucked because he wasn’t successful in the playoffs. They just played better teams, and his performance in the playoffs was actually great. I don’t blame T-Mac for not getting it done. He didn’t have the longest prime, but he was one of the top 5 players in the league at one point.

      • loungefly74 - Jan 18, 2013 at 3:34 PM

sorry. not buying it. he was cancer. just like starbury, franchise, letrell, etc… oh…they all had great numbers but those numbers were inflated garbage. did he have potential? absolutely. but he was lazy. had a notorious label of being a poor sport and being unfocused. huh, its all true man. sorry. T-Mac is overrated.

  2. magicbucs - Jan 18, 2013 at 9:48 AM

Does anyone remember tmac when he played for the magic? He was cold blooded one on one. True that his prime didn’t last long due to injuries (back problems) but from 2000-2003 he was nasty while playing for a terrible magic team thanks to grant hill. It was because of tmac carrying that team that doc rivers win coach of the year. Screw kobe

    • cosanostra71 - Jan 18, 2013 at 9:58 AM

Tracy McGrady was playing for the Toronto Raptors the year Doc Rivers won Coach of the Year.

      • badintent - Jan 18, 2013 at 10:16 PM

Tracy was going one on one with Vince Carter , everyday in practice( sorry AI) I would have paid good $$ to see some of those sessions.

    • fanofevilempire - Jan 18, 2013 at 10:19 AM

      T-Mac pooped his pants.

not onenot two, not three, not four but five rings.

    • loungefly74 - Jan 18, 2013 at 3:36 PM

T-Mac sucked. he will be (already is) a forgotten name…a cancer.

  3. coasttocoast12 - Jan 18, 2013 at 9:52 AM

I dont like Kobe at all but I don’t believe T-Mac on this. It seems that he deleted his tweet, but why would he do that if it was true ?

  4. skids003 - Jan 18, 2013 at 10:06 AM

If the “Great One” was half as wonderful as he thinks he is, he’d be averaging 100 points a game with 100% shooting percentage. His ego is sickening.

    • fanofevilempire - Jan 18, 2013 at 10:23 AM

      hey fella, are you drunk.
why are you making up things and believing they are true just because you post.
you better stop getting drunk early in the morning fella.

      • skids003 - Jan 18, 2013 at 12:18 PM

You must be drunk if his arrogance doesn’t make you sick.

  5. lbroberts123 - Jan 18, 2013 at 10:12 AM

There’s no way Kobe beats Michael Jordan 1 on 1… No way.

    • fanofevilempire - Jan 18, 2013 at 10:25 AM

how do you know this, do you see the future, what are the lotto numbers?

      • willthedolphinseverwin - Jan 18, 2013 at 11:37 AM

i do see the future, and Kobe and the Lakers arent making the playoffs lol what a joke that team.

      • tuberippin - Jan 19, 2013 at 12:38 AM

Yes, Kobe and His Airness would totally play 1-on-1 in the future, when Kobe is 45 and Jordan is 60.

  6. davidly - Jan 18, 2013 at 10:33 AM

Maybe Kobe’s on to something. The whole “team” thing is getting into the way of his true greatness. Like last night, for instance, his teammates were shooting too damn much. That Bryant couldn’t get his groove on caused him to miss 17 of his own shots and turn the ball over 6 times. D’Antoni should just have the other guys stay down at the defensive end and let the Mamba play 1 on 5.

  7. bucrightoff - Jan 18, 2013 at 10:56 AM

How about that awesome 22 points on 25 shots last night Kobe? Damn that’s cold blooded (and cold shooting). Without a doubt the NBAs most selfish player ever is #24.

  8. raidmagic - Jan 18, 2013 at 11:05 AM

Yeah Kobe did so well last night when Lebron decided to guard him at the end of the game…

  9. spthegr8 - Jan 18, 2013 at 11:20 AM

The 4th quater, was Kobe’s BEST of the game!!!! Just Saying!!!

    • progress2011 - Jan 18, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Until LBJ checked him…then he became the FAKE-MJ he is and was afraid of getting that weak crap thrown in the stands.

LBJ OWNED the Staples Center ! So much so, the fans were oooooh’ing and aaaaaah’ing for him and giving him dap from the front row as he ran past !

The ULTIMATE sign of a weak man is, to allow another dude to come into your home and WHOOP you in your own crib.

He WHOOPED kobe so bad last night…LBJ was seen leaving with Vanessa…..ahahahahaha

      • badintent - Jan 18, 2013 at 9:35 PM

Vanessa left with LBJ?? DAMN ! NOW I KNOW WHY I GOT STOOD UP !
        Check please !

  10. patfic15 - Jan 18, 2013 at 11:26 AM

Kobe s fake tough guy image he’s had since Colorado is ridiculous. Jordan would whip his a$$ one on one. If Kobe had played anywhere else, he would’ve been Bernard King.

    • fanofthegame79 - Jan 18, 2013 at 12:53 PM

And if Kobe played anywhere else, he wouldn’t have the 5 rings and he would be mentioned in the same breath as Allen Iverson – talented scorer but not much else. It’s funny how circumstances can lead one to “greatness” or to “talented scorer”.

  11. patfic15 - Jan 18, 2013 at 11:34 AM

Tired of his act. He is irrelevant amongst his generation. Too young to compete with the stars of the 80s90s…too old to hang with today’s stars. Had lebron been his age he would’ve dominated him. Go away mamba….all you were was a bridge between generations. Fade away now…

  12. fredagsedb - Jan 18, 2013 at 12:19 PM

Without Phil Jackson, Kobe would have been T-Mac without the injuries.

    • fanofthegame79 - Jan 18, 2013 at 12:55 PM

I don’t know about that. Phil Jackson was a major part – but Kobe always needed a great big man (i.e. Shaq and slightly lesser greatness, Gasol).

      • tuberippin - Jan 19, 2013 at 12:51 AM

Slightly? With all due respect to Pau Gasol, Shaq is one of the five greatest centers in the history of the league.

    • progress2011 - Jan 18, 2013 at 7:51 PM

      NICE POST !!!!

      That was SICK

  14. pantsfreezone - Jan 18, 2013 at 2:50 PM

Kobe couldn’t even beat Wade one on one last night.

Here’s a list of player that would destroy Kobe (in his prime) in one on one:

    Michael Jordan
    LeBron James
    Steve Smith
    Reggie Miller
    Charles Barkley
    Kevin Durant
    Russell Westbrook
    Hakeem Olajuwon
    Tim Duncan
    Penny Hardaway
    Steph Curry
    Larry Johnson
    Larry Bird
    James Worthy
    Scottie Pippen
    Clyde Drexler
    Blake Griffin
    Chris Paul
    and probably 1000 guys more.

Kobe is not as good as he and his fans think he is.

    • kinggw - Jan 18, 2013 at 4:46 PM

You don’t have to like Kobe, but lets not be ridiculous. Steph Curry, Steve Smith, Grandmama? Kobe would destroy all of them. Its clear you are just hating on Kobe.

      • pantsfreezone - Jan 18, 2013 at 11:55 PM

You know Kobe would have to play defense right? Not just funnel a guy to Shaq.

  15. isaiahforreal - Jan 18, 2013 at 3:53 PM

What made me laugh was the part about his back hurting and he had to quit lol, Kobe is jokes

  16. kobeisking - Jan 18, 2013 at 6:02 PM

12 time all NBA Defense in a 17 year career. But he can’t play defense. 5 NBA titles but since he has not gotten his 6th one like MJ those 5 don’t count at All… To the point of 10 guys that play better defense than 24. Question, how many of those dudes are 2guards and are better than the dude period. Same as the amount of Championship the Thunder have… ZERO! Like him or hate It is really asinine to say 5 Rings Don’t count, he couldn’t win w/o Shaq… Got 2 without him… He couldn’t win w/o Pau Gasol.. Got 3 without him! How many do they Have w/o 24? Shaq 1… Gasol 0!! At last check MJ won 6rings.. All six with Scott Pippen ONE OF THE 50greatest of ALL TIMES! DRodman… A Hall of Famer. And Rodman Had Championships before he came to CHI-Town! So Kobe had 1 HOF’er in Shaq and MJ had 2. Also MJ had Paxon/Kerr/Hodges… 3 of the NBA’s top all time 3point shooters in percentage. So that’s 2 HOF’er for MJ to Kobe’s 1. 6 Championships in 6 tries to Kobe’s 5 Championships in 7 tries. And he’s discredited because of exactly what? Mere dislike!

    • pantsfreezone - Jan 18, 2013 at 11:57 PM

Didn’t this amazing guy go like 6-24 in the only Finals he was the only superstar in? Oh wait no, he had Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum to carry him as usual.

    • chuckleberry1974 - Jan 31, 2013 at 3:31 PM

That’s like saying Derek Jeter is a great defender because he’s won like 5 gold gloves. Those awards are shams. Frickin Larry Hughes made all NBA defensive team one year because he’d hang back in passing lanes and lead the league in steals. By no means was he a great defender, though. Point is, Kobe is a good on the ball defender, but not all-time great overal defensive player like Scottie Pippen or Wilt Chamberlain.

  17. sweetnlow44 - Jan 18, 2013 at 9:08 PM

I have a feeling Kobe could cure cancer and end world hunger and people on here would still hate on him.

I would absolutely love to see a one on one matchup between Kobe and Jordan. The 2 best of all time going at it.

    • pantsfreezone - Jan 18, 2013 at 11:58 PM

You poor know nothing. Kobe isn’t even in the top 5 best of all time.

  18. abchome - Jan 19, 2013 at 1:13 AM

Kobe did beat that poor Colorado girl one-on-one…

    • chuckleberry1974 - Jan 31, 2013 at 3:32 PM

      I literally laughed out loud.

  19. swagu1 - Jan 19, 2013 at 5:06 PM

If AI played with the great bigs kobe played with, he would have more ring than kobe!
