Quote of the Day: D’Antoni doesn’t know how to describe Kobe’s off-the-ball defense

Jan 15, 2013, 8:31 AM EDT

Mike D'Antoni, Kobe Bryant AP

“Umm, it’s good … You know. I think sometimes he just … You know … Umm … Yeah, it’s good.”

—Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni, when asked to describe Kobe Bryant‘s off-the-ball defense, as reported by Dave McMenamin of

When Kobe has to defend on the ball — stop his man when said man has the ball — he is still a strong defender. He was on Kyrie Irving much of the night Sunday, helping hold him to 15 points in the Lakers win.

But over the past few seasons (and exacerbated this season), off the ball Kobe just roams around and tries to play free safety half the time. He chases the ball too much, tries to anticipate a pass to create a steal, and generally gambles and leaves the team exposed. There is no discipline and good teams, ones that move the ball, exploit this.

The Lakers are still Kobe’s team. D’Antoni is not going to go criticizing him in public. But the Lakers defense remains their biggest stumbling block, the thing most needing to be fixed if they are serious about making it into the playoffs. And Kobe is part of the problem. The Lakers get out of position, they don’t help the helper, they don’t make the second and third efforts. Kobe is part of the problem. We’ll see going forward if Kobe is part of the solution.

Clippers fans and celtics fans are delusional. What is wrong with them?????

    • losangeleschargers17 - Jan 15, 2013 at 2:18 PM

You are delusional, what’s wrong with your parents haven’t they heard of mental institutions

D12 Nash Kobe are all HOFers… Pau is a potential HOFer… The Lakers have to get that mess together. Dantoni was the worst coach to bring in to fix it. When expectations get high a Dantoni team will fold up I don’t care if Jordan was on his team they would fold. He can coach in smaller markets big markets isn’t his thing. but honestly its never good for the NBA when the Lakers Knicks and Celtics are terrible and right now the Lakers are just a bad team. Not good for the NBA…..

  3. knickstape84 - Jan 15, 2013 at 2:20 PM

also if Lakers don’t make the playoffs it will make it easier for D12 to leave with out scrutiny. we all know he really doesn’t want to be there. but he knows his image can’t take another hit unless the Lakers are bad and the fingers aren’t pointing at him. which is exactly what is happening.

  4. ebrownwareagle - Jan 15, 2013 at 2:32 PM

Again D12 is not on the verge of being a HOF’er!! Loooong way to go. Still haven’t proved anything!!

  5. klownboy - Jan 15, 2013 at 2:44 PM

princess:More inaneness from the king queen?)of it. I’m embarassed for you.

  9. pricejustin24 - Jan 15, 2013 at 5:39 PM

Phil wrote that book angry… Like he didn’t want to come back and coach Kobe this year… C’mon. Kobe will never be MJ… He’s MJ 2.0. And he will get some more rings and then all this Kobe hating will make zero sense. Proof will be in the pudding. Biotches

  10. progress2011 - Jan 15, 2013 at 5:39 PM

    Pricelessjustin !!!

Little BOY/ little girl….whateva you consider yourself – hermaphrodite ….you are spewing a lot of bark but ZERO bite
Your perspective is to be as obnoxious and rude as possible, while providing NO substance. Most Non-Faker fans can supply you with FACTS ex:
    1. Shaq was MVP of 3 of chips, while Kobe got him water and had laundry duty
    2. Pau was responsible for the Chip against Boston, when it was precluded the Fakers would lose and Kobe quit / started whining
    3. 38 games in- Kobe has 1104 points and has taken 800 FRIGGIN SHOTS at 47 %

Durant has taken 695 shots ….a whole 105 SHOTS FEWER and he has 1100 points.

So, wanna-be-like-mike is SABOTAGING his team by shooting EVERYTHING!
While Durant had taken 100 fewer shots and only trails by 4 pts and helping his team have one of the best records in the league….

    While THRASHING the fakers twice!!!

PS- this is what is known as FACTS!!!

Not the OPINIONATED GIBBERISH you are spewing, in an attempt to intimidate bloggers….you have ZERO credibility Ma’am !!

  11. pricejustin24 - Jan 15, 2013 at 5:57 PM

    I bet you’re a sabermetrics geek … That’s not sports- it’s accounting. Kobe has 5 rings … Argument over

  12. knickstape84 - Jan 15, 2013 at 9:39 PM

I know Lakers fans make it hard to like Kobe but to act like he meant nothing to the Lakers championships is clueless and stupid. He was just as important as Shaq. Shaq won another we a 2 guard that was ncloser to Kobes equal Kobe won 2 more with a Center not half the player Kobe is. But when it comes to this year Kobe is shooting wayyyyyy too much while being a liability on defense. with the guys on that team no one should be avg over 25 ppg…. Kobe isn’t allowing guys to get in any rhythm offensively. than they defense starts too lack and get disinterested in playing defense.
