Pau Gasol out, Dwight Howard a game-time decision Sunday vs. Cavaliers

Jan 13, 2013, 2:12 PM EST

Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol AP

Mike D’Antoni knew that beating the Thunder on Friday without Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol would be asking a lot of his reeling Lakers. That’s why he placed the emphasis on beginning the team’s potential run at turning things around on Sunday night’s home game against the 9-29 Cleveland Cavaliers.

“I told the team, the biggest thing is our season starts Sunday,” he said. “We’ve got to make a run. We’ve got one shot at it, and everybody needs to get ready mentally and physically.”

If the Lakers are to begin to put together a streak beginning Sunday, they’ll have to do it without Gasol, and possibly without Howard, as well.

From Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times:

Howard will be reevaluated before tip-off, and if he is able to go, his mere presence inside should ensure that Cleveland will have major difficulty offensively outside of the guard play of Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters.

The Cavaliers won the first meeting of the season between the two teams back on Dec. 11 in Cleveland, and while Gasol missed that one with knee tendinitis, the Cavaliers got 20 points, nine rebounds, and five assists from Anderson Varejao, who is now out himself due to a knee injury that required surgery.

With or without Howard, and definitely without Gasol, D’Antoni is right — the Lakers need to start piling up wins very soon if they’re going to begin to turn it around, and Sunday night against the Cavaliers would seem to be the right time to start.

We don’t need daily injury updates about a team that won’t even make the playoffs.

  2. baymac408 - Jan 13, 2013 at 2:50 PM

    Noone cares lakers are trash

    • tsutor88 - Jan 13, 2013 at 3:27 PM

The “odor” in LA is gettin worse every game. They stink and it’s nothing they can cover up with some fake smiles and twitter photos

  3. bleedforthering - Jan 13, 2013 at 3:06 PM

And the train keeps chugging garbage

  4. lakerluver - Jan 13, 2013 at 4:05 PM

Why don’t you losers comment on your own favorite teams. The fact of the matter is, the only franchise fanbase that can even began to talk crap about the LAKERS is the Celtics. The LAKERS have almost more titles than the rest of the teams COMBINED. They may be down now but you all know it won’t last too long. So, enjoy it now, losers. The fact that so many of you take such joy in the LAKERS struggles only proves what all LAKERS fans already know. Win, lose, or draw, the LAKERS are the preeminent franchise in the NBA.

    • ljl2 - Jan 13, 2013 at 5:30 PM

what stories about our favorite teams?

  5. pricejustin24 - Jan 13, 2013 at 4:05 PM

So many haters who love teams that have no championships, no chance of championships, and have to deal with this sort of let down with their own teams season after season… Haters: get a life.

  6. paulhargis53 - Jan 13, 2013 at 5:05 PM

NO!!! No lakerluver, we will not stop enjoying this utter failure of a season.

YOU, and some of your fellow fanatics couldnt help yourselves prior to the season. We all had to listen to the crap you guys were spouting. You especially have earned every post you are getting.
Own it you big f***ing crybaby!!

Jesus, you’re a 38 year old man and you’re reacting like a 5 year old.

You are the worst type of fan there is.

Nobody cares about dusty trophies, they are irrelevant to the 2012-13 season.
But since you do so much….17>16.

Go crawl back under your rock you big whiny a**hole!

    • bozosforall - Jan 13, 2013 at 10:20 PM

No…New England sports fans are the worst type of fan there is. You couldn’t find one in the entirety of the 1990s. Front running Puh C’s, every one of you.

    • Foul Dwimmerlaik - Jan 15, 2013 at 11:14 PM

      LOL!

That’s right. Those 8 straight seasons. Those 11 in 13. An era where there were hardly a dozen NBA teams.

An era when great people like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X were really relevant.

I bet the Lakers of the 80’s could have beaten those 60’s Celtics hands down…

  7. magicbucs - Jan 13, 2013 at 5:37 PM

Paul I couldn’t of said it better. You get a standing ovation.
I remember all those laker fans including lakerluvr posting on how they will be the best team in the west just by getting Nash and Howard. Now what? What’s your excuse this week? Your team sucks! Your 16/17 titles don’t mean anything in 2012/13… I bet you have only been a fan for 2 of those championships.

    • bozosforall - Jan 13, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Yeah, we know what kind of “standing ovation” you have for your boyfriend, magic bung. Too bad for you that it resembles “mini me” from the Austin Powers movies.

  8. pricejustin24 - Jan 13, 2013 at 5:41 PM

    Losers hate. So funny

  9. magicbucs - Jan 13, 2013 at 5:58 PM

Price… When did you jump on the laker bandwagon 2009? Or was it in 2000? You became a fan after they won a championship. It’s not too late to become a clipper fan. Or will you wait til whoever wins the title this season to jump teams?

Haters will hate especially when you guys talked so much trash to EVERYONE else about your 18th championship this season.
After this season Dwight will be gone, Gasol Is a has been and Kobe is a lazy defender, nash is past his prime by 10 years, your bench players belong in the D-league. NOT EVEN YOUR PAST CHAMPIONSHIPS CAN GET YOU RESPECT IN 2012/13… Nobody cares, 75% of those championships came before the 1990s. You lose!

    • bozosforall - Jan 13, 2013 at 10:27 PM

Hate to burst your bubble, idiot…but 33% of the Lakers 15 titles were won in this millennium. Contrast that with the fact that only ONE of the Celtics 17 titles were won in this century.

  10. BigBeachBall - Jan 13, 2013 at 6:01 PM

    I blame dantoni.

  11. mazblast - Jan 13, 2013 at 7:00 PM

Right. Don’t declare the game against one of the league’s premier teams, the Thunder, to be the start of your team’s “run”. Start with a game against one of the league’s schlub outfits. I have some news for you, coach–You’d better start beating more than just the dregs of the league if you hope to make the playoffs, let alone advance. Do the freaking math.

As for Howard’s presence being a deterrent to the Cavs’ entire front line, I think you should look at what Howard’s presence has meant to the Lakers’ alleged defense all year. That’s right, he hasn’t meant diddly-squat. So tonight should be different??

Lastly, who is giving Howard fashion tips? He’s a little old and a little big for the glasses-and-bowtie nerd look. Is he trying to convince someone, such as himself, that he’s intelligent? As his grandma would probably say, “Please, child.”

  12. tsutor88 - Jan 13, 2013 at 7:23 PM

FACT OF THE MATTER IS. NO TEAM IS FREE OF SCRUTINY

Yea lakers have hardware, but right now they attempted to put together a big 3 and it has royally blown up in their face. With lofty expectations comes the potential of huge letdowns. Which is exactly what were seeing, and exactly what non lakers fans are currently basking in.

The only thing you lakers fans should be hating on are your staff and personnel. Everyone on this thread is simply stating the obvious. THEY STINK

    • bozosforall - Jan 13, 2013 at 10:29 PM

Why would we hate on them? At least they try to win tiles, unlike most owners.

  13. tsutor88 - Jan 13, 2013 at 7:25 PM

Big 4 really. Pao Kobe Dwight Nash. That’s 4 perennial all stars and they are getting beat by young no names

  14. pricejustin24 - Jan 13, 2013 at 7:56 PM

Went to magics and Byron Scott’s b-ball camps when I was young, been wearing purple and good since birth… Clippers suck. Get a life all you haters– don’t know squat.

    • solitaryog7 - Jan 13, 2013 at 8:26 PM

Glad that you have been loyal to the Lakers and will continue.

Yes, Lakers have been a historic and amazing NBA franchise.

      But seriously…

      “Clippers suck.”

Sounds like hating to me. If you are willing to dish it out, you have to be willing to accept it.

    • captainwisdom8888 - Jan 14, 2013 at 11:48 AM

Yea since you went to a ball camp when u were young means we don’t know squat. You lakers fans are so dumb. You aren’t saying anything worthwhile

  15. pricejustin24 - Jan 13, 2013 at 7:57 PM

And by your accounts- Nash won 2 MVP’s after he was ‘out of his prime’ …
Haters too busy hating, don’t know much about anything

  16. paulhargis53 - Jan 13, 2013 at 8:14 PM

I don’t hate the lakers price.

I detest the turd fanbase. Go cry somewhere else. If you run your mouth, expect to get sh*t in return.

Frickin candya** fanbase….people are picking on my lakers and I don’t like it.

    Uff.

    • bozosforall - Jan 13, 2013 at 10:31 PM

If you detest “turd fanbases”, you should detest yours the most. Biggest turds on the planet.

  17. fruitcovejag - Jan 13, 2013 at 9:30 PM

Lakerlover get a life! That’s just sad man…

  18. bozosforall - Jan 13, 2013 at 10:35 PM

The haters from Boston can’t help themselves…they have been hating on the Yankees for so long that hating on other teams is part of heir DNA. The region has produced nearly a century of haters, fueled almost exclusively by the dominance of the Yankees over their second-rate baseball franchise.

  19. Power Zone Sports - Jan 13, 2013 at 10:43 PM

Reblogged this on Power Zone Sports and commented:
I’m so tired of all the injuries, the updates on injuries, the potential injuries! LOL This is a mess. I have been a Laker fan since the MAGIC & KAREEM DAYS but boy oh boy has this year started out crazy!!!

  20. paulhargis53 - Jan 13, 2013 at 10:56 PM

bozo/lakerluver, you are a blithering idiot.

That you don’t see the idiocy of your postings is highly comical.

Keep saying when the titles were won, it still doesn’t change the fact of: 17>16
You’re boring and inane under 2 different names.

price: Bozosforall/lakerluver is a small sample of why your fanbase is detestable.
You’re fast becoming just like him.

By you saying things against the clippers, you’re doing the same things you’re accusing us of doing. You’re a moron if you don’t get that.

Come to grips with the fact that your team stinks this year. Nobody Cates about your past titles. You tools have run your stupid mouths for quite some time, now its coming back on you. F***ing deal with it and quit being such a b*tch about it.

bozo/LL: I’m not a Red Sox or Patriots fan, not everyone bashing you under both screen names is a Boston fan you flipping troglodyte. Lakers/Yankees fan huh? how convenient for you, let me guess, I bet your a Packers/Steelers/or Cowboys fan too….. Loser. You should take a bath with an electrical appliance.

    • bozosforall - Jan 14, 2013 at 12:11 AM

Hate to break it to you, Pudhummer…but most Boston fans have no respect for you if you aren’t an across the board Boston fan. They hate bandwagon jumpers like you more than they hate Yankee fans.

As for the Clippers, I couldn’t care less about them…they are a joke of a franchise due to the fact that their owner is one of the cheapest and most inept in the NBA. I truly feel for their fan base, however small it may be.

BTW, not a fan of any of those three NFL teams, so once again you are wrong.

As for your paranoid suggestion that I am also “lakerluver”…keep on showing what a blithering idiot and troglodyte (to assign those labels where they truly belong) YOU really are. If you can’t tell that we are to entirely different posters, then it just might be time for the guys in white jackets to pay a visit to you and cart you off tothe loony bin where you belong.

    • tsutor88 - Jan 14, 2013 at 3:08 AM

I agree with above statement. Why are these sissies so surprised that the lakers are being hated on? They added Dwight and Nash and got way worse! THAT COMES WITH SCRUTINY!!!!

Wake up. This is the world we live in and you all sound so surprised

Also, if you make a statement, try supporting your statement with evidence or reasoning. HAHAHA EVERY LAKER FAN IS SO DIMWITTED

  21. pricejustin24 - Jan 13, 2013 at 11:46 PM

It’s fine to say you think the 2012-13 lakers suck… Why do you have to say it so loud/much with such passion?? You have some issues. A lot of things suck, like the clippers.

  22. solitaryog7 - Jan 14, 2013 at 12:03 AM

I’ll concede that the Clippers have been a losing franchise for the most part. And yes, compared to the Lakers they have been laughable. My contention is that for the last number of years the Clippers(other than letting GM O’Shea leave to Portland) have been making some good decisions as a franchise. Drafted Griffin, matched offer sheet on Deandre Jordan, extended Griffin’s contract, traded for CP3, signed Billups, made it to the second round of the playoffs last year, signed Crawford, Barnes, Hill, and Odom(again) and has a rising star in Bledsoe and with the best/2nd best record in the NBA this season, the Clippers do not “suck”.

I’m glad that your opinion will change if they win a banner. I hope they do.

Make sure to remember your post, because if they win, please don’t be one of those haters and say, “Talk to me when they win 15 more!!!”

Otherwise, you will just sound bitter.

  23. captainwisdom8888 - Jan 14, 2013 at 11:50 AM

Boooo hooooo you guys are losers at least the lakers won titles boo hook you don’t know anything I went to Byron Scott’s ball camp wahhhhhhhhhhhnnnnn

  24. paulhargis53 - Jan 14, 2013 at 7:17 PM

price: You’re a f***ing tool. Nobody is jealous of you. Get over yourself you moron. The ONLY reason we detest you is because of your loudmouth, know nothingness. Calling us babies, when you are the one crying about us “hating” on your favorite team? Do you realize how moronic you look? Of course you don’t, you continue to spout the same garbage over and over.
I will give you the same advice I gave bozosforall, you should think about taking a long hot bath with an electrical appliance.
You’re nothing but a whiny b*tch, crying about people not rooting for your favorite team. What are you 12?
If all you’re going to do is whine, quit f***ing posting.

  25. pricejustin24 - Jan 14, 2013 at 7:31 PM

    Haha you have issues. Gfy
