Report: Kevin Love needs surgery on hand, out 8-10 weeks

The basketball gods are not done taking out their vengeance on the Minnesota Timberwolves just yet.

Kevin Love’s broken hand is worse than had first been reported — he needs surgery and will be out eight to 10 weeks, tweets Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports.

Love missed the start of the season recovering from a broken hand he suffered doing knuckle pushups at home. He returned averaging 18.3 points and 14 rebounds a game, but the hand injury clearly still bothered him as he shot just 35.2 percent.

Then last Thursday he re-broke his hand in a fluke incident while playing the Denver Nuggets.

Eight weeks would have him returning in mid-March, with less than a month to go in the season. How hard he pushes to get back may depend on where the Timberwolves are in the standings — right now they are the nine seed in the West, 1.5 games back of the eight seed Nuggets. The West is tight with just 5.5 games separating the six seed Rockets and the 11 seed Lakers. If by the middle of March the Timberwolves have slipped out of playoff contention there would be no motive to rush Love back.

Then again, they have hung in this long with limited contributions from Love and Ricky Rubio (returning from an ACL tear plus having back spasms). So hope should not die. That mountain just looks a lot harder to climb right now.

Love spent one semester at UCLA…I don’t think he is a Bruin.

which was his only NCAA season before going pro…

8-10 more weeks? Wow, hide the buffet table, he’s going to gain all that weight back.

  4. jammer73 - Jan 9, 2013 at 4:42 PM

I guess he ain’t gettin traded for Gasol now.

This shows that there’s a reason that there is a timetable for return and of course everyone wants to come back early and help this team but love came back way earlier than expected and I’m sure his bone or the areas around the bone were not completely fixed.

Time for D-Will to make his mark! I’m still convinced that Williams is going to be a huge star and now he should get the minutes to prove it.

  7. dluxxx - Jan 9, 2013 at 5:06 PM

Well, time for Derrick Williams to step up and prove he was worth that 2nd overall pick. Hate to see Love go down, and the Wolves are definitly better with a healthy K Love, but he just hasn’t been himself this year. I’ll be interested to see if any moves are made here in the next couple weeks now.

    Rudy gay to the Twolves

  9. lakerluver - Jan 9, 2013 at 5:57 PM

There is no need for the LAKERS to trade for Love when he’s going to them as a free agent anyway.

Okay lakerluver, in four years he will be a Laker? With his propensity to injury, he would fit right in.

  12. lakerluver - Jan 9, 2013 at 7:35 PM

I could be wrong but I think he can leave Minny in 3 years. Meaning, two more after this one. I’ll do my research though to be sure.

  13. lakerluver - Jan 9, 2013 at 7:43 PM

Just checked…he can leave in the summer of 2015. Considering the fact that he’ll just be entering his prime years by then I’m sure we here in LAKERLAND won’t mind waiting. So, I hope he takes as long as possible to recuperate….meanwhile, he won’t be putting mileage on his body for when he inevitably goes back home.

hey buddy! good to hear from ya! hey, ma…keep posting…keep posting and doing your thing, man!

  14. rgledz - Jan 9, 2013 at 8:16 PM

@Lakerluver… he’s going home huh…..the Portland Trailblazer fans are excited. Idiot

  15. lakerluver - Jan 9, 2013 at 8:28 PM

You know EXACTLY what I meant, sir. Portland doesn’t attract “elite” free agents. Love will never go there unless he’s traded there. Heck, most of Portland’s current roster probably doesn’t want to be there. I’m sure it’s a beautiful place to live but California’s much nicer, sir. And if the choice is a Blazers jersey or a LAKERS jersey I’m guessing the vast majority of players would choose the PURPLE AND GOLD, sir.

    • mazblast - Jan 9, 2013 at 11:43 PM

LL, he went to high school in Oregon and rooted for the Blazers as a kid. You keep talking about him and others “coming home”, but for most people, “going home” means going back to where you grew up.

As for where he’ll go in 2015, any talk now is just idle, stupid speculation. Why not wait until the time is a bit closer?

    • kavika6 - Jan 10, 2013 at 11:33 AM

the vast majority of players would choose the PURPLE AND GOLD?

Why would anyone want to go to one of the worst teams in the league? That’s like saying everyone wants to go to Cleveland.

  16. paulhargis53 - Jan 9, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Why would he want to play for an ignorant fanbase such as yours? LL, I thought you only loved large sweaty black men…

Why are you hiding out on T wolves posts? Oh, that’s right the lakers are sucking a$$….carry on.

  17. paulhargis53 - Jan 9, 2013 at 10:37 PM

Hey LL/bozosforall….just for your edification….the lakers lost AGAIN tonight….15-20. They suck about as hard as you do squish mitten.
