Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol injured, out indefinitely for Lakers

Because Kobe Bryant needed an excuse to take more shots…

The Lakers will be without big men Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill on a two game, back-to-back road trip against Houston and San Antonio this week, but it could be more — both starters are listed as out “indefinitely.” Howard is out at least a week with a shoulder injury and Gasol has a concussion and he will need to be cleared by a league neurologist before he can play again.

The Lakers announced this after cancelling practice Monday because… well, what was the point?

Howard had played through shoulder pain recently and an MRI Monday revealed a torn labrum, tweets Lakers reporter Mike Trudell. He will sit out a week (which means he misses the Thunder game at Staples on Friday) and will then be re-evaluated. (Jason Smith of the Hornets missed two weeks with this.)

Gasol got a concussion when he took an inadvertent JaVale McGee elbow to the face on Sunday night, one that left Gasol with a very bloody nose at the time. He will not travel with the team to Texas. The way this works is he has to pass some baseline tests after increasing physical activity and have those test results approved by a league neurologist. This could take days, it could take weeks.

Jordan Hill has a hip injury and will have that looked at by the team doctor Monday afternoon. They haven’t done it yet because it appears his waiting room is full.

What does this mean? Look for a lot of small ball from the Lakers — Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, Jodie Meeks and Metta World Peace together — along with guys like Earl Clark getting in not just because George Karl picked them to shoot free throws (because Gasol was hurt). Robert Sacre could start on Tuesday for Los Angeles. World Peace could get some time at the five.

The Lakers have lost three in a row and face three strong teams this week in Houston (playing well lately), San Antonio and OKC. If the losing streak reaches six… well, the playoffs become harder and harder to reach. It has taken at least 46 wins to make the playoffs in the West the past few years and the Lakers have to go 31-18 the rest of the way to do that. Which includes these three games and the upcoming long Grammy road trip. Good luck.

Crybaby Howard tore her labia. Sounds about right.

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise and we can see how fast this team can run and gun without the Big Men. Now is the time for this team to put all aside play hard!!! Kobe and Steve and Meta the time is Now!!!!!!!! No More Mister Nice Guys!!

Glass half full, I like that.

  4. paulhargis53 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:16 PM

Although I’d never root for injuries, this just keeps getting better and better.

All those mouthy lakers fans when these trades went down are no crying about everything under the sun.

I know there are som good lakers fans on here, but there majority are loudmouth know nothing’s….

Where’s Professor Dwimmerlaik lately? lakerfandownunder? the unflushable turd lakerluver?

    This team makes the playoffs….nope!

    • zacksdad - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:42 PM

Maybe Mitch will pull another rabbit out of his hat. Last time we had our center out like this we got Gasol. Lets see how creative Mitch can get.

Well now the coach has a team with no bigs, just how he likes it.

  5. cantonbound13 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:18 PM

Has anyone seen Gasol’s big boy pants?

    • zerole00 - Jan 7, 2013 at 5:15 PM

Meaning? Last I heard a concussion isn’t something you should “suck up” as shown by the legal mess the NFL is going through. Or do you think you’re tough enough to take a McGee elbow to the face and be fine?

I’m guessing no and this is more internet tough talk.

      • thesixersbench - Jan 7, 2013 at 7:57 PM

Now, now, don’t throw a hissy fit just because you didn’t get the reference.

Kobe said Pau needed to “put on his big boy” pants earlier this year. He’s alluding to that and making a joke.

Might be a chance for Jamison to get some minutes

  7. unxpexted1 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:22 PM

    Hopefully ebanks gets some burn.

  8. bucs24 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:24 PM

Who cares, they suck with them anyway

  9. cosanostra71 - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:45 PM

The picture of Kobe and Dwight fake fighting in the training room today is awesome. Go Lakers.

    • mazblast - Jan 7, 2013 at 5:06 PM

We’ll be glad to tell them where to go.

      • cosanostra71 - Jan 7, 2013 at 5:09 PM

        preferably higher in the standings!

  10. hoodheisman - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:47 PM

Just when we were getting enough data points together to fire D’Antoni, now this happens. If this delays the firing of D’Antoni, then this is officially a disaster’s disaster.

    • eventhorizon04 - Jan 7, 2013 at 7:55 PM

Firing D’Antoni accomplishes nothing unless a better alternative is available to be hired.

And considered that Jim Buss publicly humiliated Phil Jackson just a couple of months ago by hiring D’Antoni instead of Jackson and leaking insulting information about Jackson’s alleged demands, you better not suggest Jackson.

      • hoodheisman - Jan 7, 2013 at 9:38 PM

I suggest the guy engaged to the owner’s daughter…. I think his name is Phil Jackson.

  11. limonadamas - Jan 7, 2013 at 4:47 PM

At this point you just have to throw up your hands and laugh… This team is so star-crossed. Even the most strident Laker hater couldn’t have seen all of this happening prior to the season.

We’re soon going to be six games under .500. The ship be sinking…

  12. mungman69 - Jan 7, 2013 at 5:06 PM

Time to blow up this team. Just a bunch of old men.

  13. gwylie1 - Jan 7, 2013 at 5:45 PM

    FREE ROBERT SACRE.

    go zags

  14. aboogy123456 - Jan 7, 2013 at 6:16 PM

These comments have become so stupid full of all these laker haters, most that don’t understand basketball. Can we actually discuss basketball on here? What are we going to do without 3 really good players, all of whom are big men?

This really sucks. And it sucks that kurt is such an idiot he has to start the article with some stupid jab at kobe taking shots. Kobe is a scorer, not a ballhog, shut up and learn how to spell.

  15. progress2011 - Jan 7, 2013 at 7:13 PM

I guess in addition to their injuries, D12 and Gasol have concluded, there are ZERO plays being ran for them!
Their roles are to get the ball out of the net or get the rebound, when Wanna-be-like- MJ, jacks up one of those Harlem Globetrotter shots!
As Pau proved during the Olympics, he had PLENTY of game left! And in order for D12 to get back to form, he needs touches.
BUT wanna-be-like-MJ is taking more shots than Pau, Nash and D12 COMBINED….with no end in sight.
So, both of them have probably concluded, they don’t need to rush back!

THEY WON’T MAKE THE PLAY OFFS….So much for the 70 win prediction by clueless Faker Fans…..AHAHAHAHA

  16. showtimefolks007 - Jan 7, 2013 at 7:34 PM

this could be a blessing too, Dantoni wants to run so let’s see with some fresh legs in the lineup and players who want to prove they belong.

lakers still got jordan hill who is young, athletic and can rebound and score.

i know haters will just say, we told you so but i trust in Mitch, he pulled off the gasol trade, and this offseason added players many thought lakers don’t have a chance to get.

also i am not really against the idea of trading howard and gasol to get younger and improve.

Imagine what a dwight howard trade will haul along with gasol who raptors want badly

  17. paulhargis53 - Jan 7, 2013 at 7:58 PM

aboogy: The way your fanbase ran their mouthes prior to the season, now we’re supposed to feel sorry for you and just “talk basketball”? Give me a damn break!!

I don’t hate the lakers at all. I detest a majority of the fanbase on here.

You wanna talk basketball? This team is a wreck, even when healthy. Without you’re 3 bigs? Ooof! And I coyldnt be happier about it. All the smacktalk is coming back on you guys now. Just take it. That’s all you can do, your fanbase earned it in spades.

    • bozosforall - Jan 8, 2013 at 12:10 AM

So hypocritical, given that the Boston sports fan base is the most obnoxious of them all, win or lose. Clean up your own backyard first, Pudhummer.

  18. djjackson81 - Jan 7, 2013 at 7:58 PM

Wishing the lakers miss playoffs so Phoenix get there first round lottery pick if so. Go Lakers loose loose loose

  19. jerdogthompson - Jan 7, 2013 at 8:59 PM

    Djackson

Actually the way I understand it is if the Lakers finish with the 15th worse record or worse then Phoenix gets nada, butkus, zero. In other words protected pick 1-14.

Be careful what u wish for muchacho.

  20. lakerluver - Jan 7, 2013 at 10:05 PM

    @ph53
Dude, or dudette (whichever applies!) why don’t you worry about the Celtics. Last time I checked they weren’t looking like title favorites either. You better pray they get Cousins because we all know that no elite free agents are going there. They have to get traded there.

  21. lakerluver - Jan 7, 2013 at 10:07 PM

Some of you losers get more joy out of seeing the LAKERS lose than out of seeing your favorite team win.

  22. lakerluver - Jan 7, 2013 at 10:11 PM

    @djjackson81
    Dude, you had THREE chances to spell L O S E correctly and you still couldn’t get it right!! You, sir are a L O O S E R.

  23. paulhargis53 - Jan 7, 2013 at 10:22 PM

LL/Bozo: You’re actually stooping to calling me a girl for your comeback?
    Uff.
    # 1 I didn’t have the Celtics in the finals prior to a game being played. You and tour fanbase had the lakers at 70 wins and winning the finals.
#2. Currently, the Celtics would be in the playoffs, lakers? not so.much.

I love to see my team win. But I also love watching the lakers implode. Not because I hate the.lakers. Because you and your fellow turds couldnt quit running your mouthes.

    Reap the whirlwind sausage wallet..

    • bozosforall - Jan 8, 2013 at 12:07 AM

For the millionth time…I’m not lakerluver, idiot boy Pudhummer. I actually here to post, win or lose…unlike lakerluver…and unlike you on Puh C’s posts when they lose. Guess you are just too busy on your knees in the Puh C’s locker room consoling he players on the nights when they lose.

And I challenge you to find even ONE post where I ever predicted that the Lakers were going to win 70 games and win the Finals. As opposed o all of the New England idiot fans who have had to eat crow over the past several years with their erroneous predictions. Clean up your own backyard before you start coming after Lakers fans.

MOST IMPORTANTLY…FIVE rings to a measly ONE in this millenium means that you have little room to talk, moron.

  24. lakerluver - Jan 7, 2013 at 10:24 PM

    @ph53
You never wish for any player to get injured?!! What a load of crap that is!! I only wish I could repost some of your comments to expose what a liar you are. You’re as fake as that sock you stuff in your shorts to impress the ladies!!!

  25. dko83 - Jan 8, 2013 at 3:05 AM

Bozo/LL going to have a lot of free time come playoffs. Could always catch a Celtics game..
