Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Garnett go at it, receive double technicals (VIDEO)

Jan 7, 2013, 11:28 PM EDT

The Celtics didn’t need Rajon Rondo to beat the Knicks at MSG on Thursday; they only needed to get inside Carmelo Anthony‘s head.

Kevin Garnett did so masterfully, and Anthony shot a miserable 6-of-26 from the field which helped the Celtics come away with a critical road victory against one of the top teams in the East.

Rondo was suspended for making contact with an official in Boston’s win over the Hawks on Saturday.

Garnett and Anthony were doing plenty of jawing up until this point, but after a battle in the post when the talking continued, the referees finally stepped in and whistled both for double technical fouls.

Garnett’s reputation is that of a physical player who will say literally anything on the court to get his opponents off of their game, and Anthony, quite simply, took the bait on this night.

Anthony knows full well that Garnett might talk a big game, but that he won’t engage in anything physical, no matter how crazy the verbal sparring might get. Anthony felt he had license to go after Garnett verbally, and that might have been true. But it distracted him enough to the point where his game was affected, and that’s all that Boston needed to come out of this one with a much-needed victory.

    Shut up Brett.

Anthony should have received a 2nd technical in the 4th when he whacked KG after the whistle (after he had already fouled him).

There are a few reports saying that Anthony went to the Celtics locker afterwards screaming and yelling, but that no physical altercation ensued. Interesting.

There have been tweets about melo going into the Celtic tunnel and yelling at celtic players. What an ass. Bad night so he acts like a little punk. The celts are not the team you want to get physical with. Especially KG. good win celts.

I hate both teams, but this is KG’s M.O.

  4. aklolzer - Jan 7, 2013 at 11:47 PM

What is this soccer? Let them play and fight!!!

  5. scalfor3 - Jan 7, 2013 at 11:49 PM

Celtics are a different team with Avery Bradley. He has such a noticeable positive impact when he’s out there.

What I’ve been telling folks all along, I mean when a team is missing one of their Starters of course they’re not gonna be the same team, and yeah they may struggle until that starter comes back. It’s common sense people.

      • saint1997 - Jan 8, 2013 at 12:11 AM

the Knicks still don’t have Iman Shumpert, who is a more talented version of Avery Bradley…

  6. jjordannba - Jan 7, 2013 at 11:59 PM

Even with the Celtics and Knicks flipping places this season(record-wise), The Knicks are still the Celtics B!.tches

At least we can beat the Heat, unlike Boston…

      • mrcuret - Jan 8, 2013 at 12:34 AM

And get swept in the first round too, unlike Boston.

      • andyhr17 - Jan 8, 2013 at 7:57 AM

Good point. Like when you beat the Heat in the first round of the playoffs last year. No, wait, that doesn’t sound right…

    • Mr. Wright 212 - Jan 8, 2013 at 1:00 AM

      You lost.

And this is a new year. You haven’t beaten them this year. We have.

      • andyhr17 - Jan 8, 2013 at 7:58 AM

You’re right. The Knicks can be champs of the regular season! you can make your own trophy and everything, all while watching them whither when the “real” season starts.

  7. Mr. Wright 212 - Jan 8, 2013 at 12:23 AM

When you’re allowed to be “physical” by pulling and grabbing all night like Bradley, Lee, Garnett and Floppinger did all night, while the Knicks aren’t even allowed to get near a guy before they call foul, well, you have no chance.

    • acdc363 - Jan 8, 2013 at 8:13 AM

And people call Celtics fans complainers… LOL

    • scalfor3 - Jan 8, 2013 at 11:01 AM

LOL did you watch the game? Both teams played physical as hell. The game was poorly called at times, but I saw plenty of bad calls (and no-calls) on both sides.

Reblogged this on D-Turbs and commented:
    I would take Melo

  9. nycalldayz - Jan 8, 2013 at 12:34 AM

The Knicks and Melo need to put their “Big Boy Pants” on stop acting like punks when teams get physical. The Celtics along with the Bulls, Grizzles and Rockets have all been physical with the Knicks. The Knicks in responese cry and complain. How about stop shooting 3’s and attack the rim once in a while.

Getting into with Garnett had little to do with Carmelo’s off shooting night. By the time things got heated with Garnett, he had been something like 6-24 from the field. He was just off, faced some tough defense and took some tough shots, although he hit a few of them.

  11. wrilson13 - Jan 8, 2013 at 2:18 AM

Hate to admit that I used to root for Melo when he played at ‘Cuse. What an ultra-maroon.

  12. dko83 - Jan 8, 2013 at 2:42 AM

Melo playing right into his hands. Mission accomplished for KG… Trying to rattle him, success.

  13. dja1287 - Jan 8, 2013 at 7:28 AM

    Sigh……Knicks fans

  14. spthegr8 - Jan 8, 2013 at 8:38 AM

It’s one thing too play with a chip on your shoulder. But Kg is just an A$$HOLE!!!! Rondo is also & Paul pierce is drama queen. Good for you Melo!!!!

    • dja1287 - Jan 8, 2013 at 10:25 AM

Not of fan of either team but leaving Carmelo Anthony out of the drama queen category is not realistic. Knicks fans are just as delusional as Notre Dame fans. Do you also think “Eddie” was a factual based movie just like “Rudy” too?

  15. tomtravis76 - Jan 8, 2013 at 8:57 AM

Lets get to the playoffs. 80’s style physical basketball could be back. The Knicks just need a goon, heck every team needs a goon. When they play again, KG is going to get whacked real hard. KG is a great player, but he is trying to be the old bully ever since he joined the Celtics. He gets zero national attention and he is pissed that all the Olympic guys are the face of the league with their inner circle.

So glad basketball is fun again.
