Barkley says old, slow Lakers have no shot at NBA title

A few diehard Lakers fans are still clinging on to the hope they could win an NBA title this season.

Why? Why is the team itself still optimistic? Because they still have so much talent, something Kevin Ding explains at the Orange Country Register. That talent hasn’t been healthy or fit together all that well yet, the defense and bench are in question, but the possibility of what that talent could bring keeps title hopes alive in Lakers nation.

Charles Barkley would like to crush those hopes.

He was on The Dan LeBatard Show on 790 The Ticket in Miami and did not mince words when asked if the Lakers could win a title this year (thanks to Sports Radio Interviews).

“None. Zero. Zero chance. I think Oklahoma City, Memphis and the Spurs are the three best teams in the West. I still have my concerns. Everybody is on the Clippers’ bandwagon. I don’t like their half-court offense. I don’t like their free throw shooting. I love Chris Paul. I said it for years. I thought Jason Kidd was the best leader in the NBA. I passed that mantle, in my personal opinion, to Chris Paul, but I don’t like their half-court offense.”

Earlier in the interview Barkley reiterated what he said on TNT — the Lakers look old and slow.

It’s hard to see the Lakers even getting above a six seed after the hole they have dug themselves. They are not catching OKC or San Antonio, and despite Barkley’s concerns they are not catching the Clippers in the regular season either. (I don’t share Barkley’s concerns about the Clippers, but we will see where they are come March and April.) The West is deep with good teams and while I expect the Lakers make the playoffs they have made their playoff road much more difficult.

Barkley sees what we all do out East — the Miami Heat are the best team and look like a force of nature when they are focused. The Knicks have had some backsliding of late and they still might be the most likely second best in the East (maybe if the Pacers get Danny Granger back and Roy Hibbert out of his slump they can step into that role).

You all can say whatever you want about C. Barkley (and I’m not a big fan), but he does know what he’s talking about most of the time, he’s an NBA HOFer (or, did you forget?) and he was a serious force back in his day. The Lakers are not very good (really) and they are not going to win a title with this squad this season; Howard is a bust and Nash is up there in age as well as Kobe, and, D’Antoni’s system is for a younger group of players with young legs and it has never really won anything. You can’t win a title without defense! Stop hating on Charles; he played in one of the best eras of NBA basketball history. Ewing, Miller, Bernard King, Karl Malone, John Stockton…, all never won an NBA Championship. Give it a rest already and have some contsructve contributions in your posts, beside hating on what Barkley’s opinion is. He did win an Olympic Gold Medal with a few of those who never won a ring; the greatest team ever assembled. Yeah, he says some dumb things outside of the topic of b-ball but he does know the game extremely well. Oh, and you all are still paying enough attention to post your comments and he’s still rich. That “ain’t” being dumb or a loser. None you could beat him in a game now and he’s pretty busted up from b-ball, physically and none of you would ever pick a fight with him. He may not know anything about winning a championship but he did know how to redefine his position and become a Hall Of Famer. Get your collective minds right.

Nothing but a bunch of overpaid former stars (Kobe too, to a lesser extent), overrated saviors (Howard) and media hype. NO coach could win to any extent with this crew. Phil knows what he is doing (or not). Get over it, fans and media. Happened with late 70’s Celtics when only Cowens was still in his prime. Havlicek, Bing and others were on the way out. FORMER all stars.

I hate to have to agree with Chuckles Barkley but the Lakers will never win a championship as long as Dumbtoni is coach, even if the Lakers were loaded with all the best stars in the league. The problem with the Lakers looking old and slow is the ignorant system of offense and defense Dumbtoni has wrought upon our once mighty team. Only the King of the Kingdom of Idiots would try to play a small ball offense with this Laker’s lineup.

I saw some of the early game and wondered what the heck Pau was doing shooting and missing three’s when he should be down low working with Howard to put the other team’s big men in foul trouble. The Lakers just don’t have any defense because Dumbtoni has no clue how to devise any defensive scheme that works, just looks at his pathetic career.

The sooner the Lakers fire Dumbtoni and hire Phil Jackson the better, the little idiot buss boy had better get a clue he screwed up badly picking a new coach. The sooner the Lakers dump Ancient Nash and bring in a young talented point guard like Kyrie Irving the sooner the Lakers will stop looking old and slow.

Go Kobe!!! Fire Dumbtoni!!! We Want Phil!!!

It’s not just the coach. The aging roster needs an overhaul. A better coach could MAYBE get em’ into the late rounds of playoffs, no better.

What’s the matter Blowzo? Lakers got pounded, so you can’t put together a decent post? I mean they weren’t great before, but they are just pathetic now.

    You sir are a felcher.

      @paul
Somehow I reminded of that old saying, ya know, people that live in glass house’s. I get your beef with LL or Bozo or whoever he may be, but too call the Lakers “pathetic” while the C’s are playing JUST as bad is crazy too me. Now I know Laker fan’s did talk a bunch of sh*t before the season even started, but the C’s are JUST as OLD and struggling too. What I’m saying is, we both are in the same building, we just have different view’s!!! Just Saying!!!

Felcher would describe you perfectly, pillow biter.

Uff. Your posts are getting weaker. Why don’t you just give up? You’re a beaten man.
