Gesep don’t tell me bout respect your probably old can’t hack it and couldn’t when you were young either… All star games should be exciting not just a trophy game for older more celebratized players.. Yes I made that word up.. Point is let the players that deserve to be there play.. The exciting playmakers and stat earners.. And YES TIM DUNCAN IS SOOO BORING LET DAVID LEE IN!!!!!

I like Barkley but am really tired of him rant about fans voting every year. The media and coaches get to select a team and they have made some real bone-headed slections of their own. If he is concerned about his vote being the second team, then let media and coaches vote first team and fans second team. I would prefer that anyway. Maybe fans should just stop watching the all star game and let Barkley and his like-minded biggots watch it by themselves.

Tim Duncan doesn’t deserve it? really? I’m not one of his fans and to be honest I hate Spurs organization, but his stats per 36 are like in his prime years (which were pretty good last time I checked). what more do u want from 36yrs old? although i get he’s not, let say interesting, for this kind of game…

by the way Charles. everyone knows howard is not playing like an allstar, but his numbers are still allstar (also those like efficiency) so who do u want to start huh?

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! “redbear” is right. It’s a fan driven contest so they can watch the players they like. Personally, I voted for Lin, and I think that had he been able to stay with the Knicks, he would have had the benefit of being coached by Jason Kidd (which was the original plan). I think that had that happened, Lin would be progressing much faster. Instead, Felton has been the beneficiary of Kidd’s mentoring, and he’s been better for it!

I guess Barkley forgets the All-Star game is mainly for the fans. It’s true players get voted for due to popularity but since it’s supposed to be all about the fans watching who they want to see, then Charles should just shut his mouth as usual and continue his ride into his championship-less world.

blue lightning: No, the NFL doesn’t get it right.Players are voted on reputation even moreso there. Clay Mathews starting after missing 1/2 a season is 1 example.
3-4 linebackers get more love because of gaudy stats. I could go on and on about deserving players being passed over.

All of the all star games are popularity contests. Muck like Kobe being on all defense teams when he hasn’t been elite at it for sever years.

If they get in based on retirement thats one thing. But do you think Tim Duncan deserves to be in the 2013 all-star game over David Lee based on the 2012-2013 stats? I’m not taking anything away from Tim’s career, but David Lee has earned it. Same with Garnett getting in over Noah and Varejao.

While it is obviously not as important as other achievements and recognitions, I do often see the number of all-star games listed for HOF candidates as if this were a legitimate benchmark for career success. Either make the whole thing consequential, or make the whole thing entirely inconsequential.

I think it is a damn shame that NBA ”fans” like you have such little respect for the things that these old guys have done consistently. Why not let them play in this one All-Star game which may be their last?
If those young guys you mentioned are so good then why dont they wait for next year and perform great consistnently(like those old timers did) to make an all star team?
If the new talent is such a talent then wait and see if they perform next year also.

Barkley is right.. All these in educated fans just pick all the old bastards that have been in the league for the past 10 all star games.. There’s so much new talent let go of the old names already… those players like Garnett Tim Duncan and all the other old timers that people can’t let go of, don’t deserve it at all.. It’s not fair to the dudes that are averaging better like David lee… Or Steph curry has been killin it.. But they don’t get votes because people won’t let go of the past.. It’s a damn shame

I think fans should vote but it should be weighted, maybe only worth 30% of the total. The problem is, what to do with the other 70%? Coaches are concerned with who they play next so how much weight would you give them (we don’t want another college FB Coach’s Poll)? Players should have a say. Scouts, too. The media should, too, but they would probably favor the media centers as they do in other sports polls.

Maybe some statistical baseline should be thrown in like PER. However, then we would see deserving guys like David Lee and most fans would go “who?”.

A mixture of everything would be better than the current system.

What a hypocrite. He just said fans vote for who they want to see, not the best player, then tells them to stop voting for Jeremy Lin? If you want to see Jeremy Lin, vote for him! If you want to see Mario Chalmers, vote for him! Either that, or change your stance to be voting for the best players. You can’t have it both ways.

Charles isn’t necessarily right OR wrong. we all get where he is going with this… If you measure a players success by “All Star Game” appearances, then by all means it should NOT be voted by fans. But, if the so called “All Star Game” is just a game in which the fans just get to see their favorite players run around the court and entertain the crowd, (which is EXACTLY what it really is) then it SHOULD be voted on by fans. It is just a game set up to sell merchandise and get TV ratings, so if Kwame Brown had a billion fans and sold a billion jerseys (yeah friggin right), the NBA would GLADLY hope the fans vote him into the “All Star Game”. Maybe the title “All Star” doesnt really represent the game all that well, but we cant be that surprised at how the players are selected. It is just marketing.

In terms of seeing the guys who’ve actually played best that season, fan voting is a disaster. But if the goal is to give the fans the guys whose names they know, then it works just fine. Yao Ming would still be making the team even in retirement if they put his name on the ballot.
