Report: If Nets don’t land Phil Jackson they may stick with Carlesimo for season

This much we know — the New Jersey Nets big plan to replace Avery Johnson starts with Phil Jackson. They want the biggest name out there, the guy with 11 championship rings, to come in and make the whole better than the sum or its parts with this Nets team. I still don’t think he takes the job but they are going after him.

And if he says no, Plan B is… nobody knows.

While some names — Kelvin Sampson, Jeff Van Gundy — have been floated, they may just stick with P.J. Carlesimo for the rest of this season, tweets Marc Stein of ESPN.

First, this would give Carlesimo a chance. Win enough and he gets to keep the job.

I can see why this may be the call because the coaches that have options (Stan Van Gundy, for example) may look at the Nets roster and ownership’s expectations and take a pass. And then you are falling down the ladder and the guy you do go with knows he was option number four. Or five.

Waiting until summer makes sense, because getting anyone mid-season is not going t lead to a dramatic change instantly unless that person knows how to get Deron Williams to throw off the shackles of mediocrity. (And I’m not sure anyone but Deron Williams can do that.)

Why would Phil Jackson want to coach this dysfunctional team? There is talent on this team but the talent level’s not at all worth the aggravation that is sure to follow? Then there is the owner who wants to win now. Not a good receipt for success.

Why would Phil Jackson want to coach a talented team burdened with internal dysfunction and have to deal with the demands of win-now ownership? Have you been following this guys career?

“The shackles of mediocrity…” Kurt starting off the new year with some nice writing!!! The only thing I’d change (aside from “the New Jersey Nets” in the first sentence) is to add Joe Johnson’s name to the chain gang of mediocrity.

haha nice pickup with the NJ Nets. I know JJ and Deron were meant to be big fantasy contributors! Now D-Will is my WORST player. C’mon

Jesus you are terrible at your job…

I just hope they do not sign Phil. I still want the Minneapolis Lakers to sign him.

I heard the Baltimore Bullets have him locked up…

I think they’re a few months too late. With cap space and giving Phil have the opportunity to spend it and build the team as he saw fit? He might have jumped at that opportunity for the right price. But they’re locked into their current roster thanks to overpaying for basically everybody. Phil would need to believe they were capable of contending “as is.” Does anybody really believe that to be the case?

Let Deron coach. He seems to be an expert when it comes to how his teams should be coached….

Minneapolis Lakers makes sense, L.A. Lakers doesn’t.

Don’t worry Kurt, Phil Jackson will Just Say Nyet to the Nyets. Phil isn’t going to waste his time arguing with that coach killer Deranged Deron Williams. The Nyets aren’t good enough for Phil to come in and try to rebuild. PJ Carlesimo is a good coach and the Nyets should just let him do his thing. Heck the Nyets have a much better coach in Carlesimo than the Lakers do in Dumbtoni.

    Phil Jackson Goes to Lakers!!!
