Nikola Vucevic grabs a franchise record 29 rebounds in Magic’s loss to Heat

Dec 31, 2012, 10:48 PM EDT

Setting a franchise record in any statistical category in the NBA is no doubt something to be celebrated. But when you do it in an area that’s traditionally dominated by big men, for a franchise that’s had two of the greatest frontcourt players of this era, it’s even more impressive.

Allow me to introduce you to Nikola Vucevic, who scored a career-high 20 points and pulled down a franchise record 29 rebounds for the Orlando Magic in their overtime loss to the Heat on Monday.

You can see how active Vucevic was in the clip above — granted, the Heat aren’t exactly known for their dominant presence inside, and opposing team’s bigs regularly go to town on this season’s version of the defending champs.

But 29 rebounds is a [bucket] load, and in fact, that number has been matched or exceeded only twice in a game since the 1985-86 season.

Kevin Love hauled in 31 rebounds against the Knicks back in 2010, and Kevin Willis equaled the 29 back in 1991. That’s it; no one else besides these two has achieved the feat at any time in the last 27 years.

Add all that to the fact we’re talking about a team that had several seasons of two of the most dominant big men we’ve seen in the past couple of decades in Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard, and you’ve got something really special.

That’s what Vucevic was on this night, shattering the Orlando franchise record of 28 set by O’Neal back in 1993.

    Um. Charles Barkley ripped down 33 boards in his first game as a Houston Rocket in the 1996 season opener.

    • mpmffc - Jan 1, 2013 at 12:12 AM

      Bynum had 30 boards last season against the Spurs too

      • areyesrn - Jan 1, 2013 at 6:29 AM

        Sixers should of kept Vukovich, @FanSince09

  2. raidmagic - Dec 31, 2012 at 11:16 PM

    That was fun to watch, he’ll never be a Dwight Howard but he will be a very good center in this league.

    • mrchainbluelightning - Jan 1, 2013 at 3:55 PM

      You mean he will never been as over-rated as Howard? Nope certainly not

  3. magicbucs - Dec 31, 2012 at 11:20 PM

    Nik vucevic is only 22 years old and will be a more complete center than Dwight Howard can even dream of becoming.
    Nik needs to bulk up in the off season and he will be an unstoppable monster.

      Magic inducted 2 new members to the Jamal Crawford Memorial All-Star Team last night. Lots of guys making that team this year.

  4. spthegr8 - Dec 31, 2012 at 11:53 PM

    Who cares the MAGIC SUCK!!!!! He could of grabbed 50 & they STILL would of lost. Won’t be a lot of comments cuz, NOBODY CARES!!! Just Saying!!!!

    • cullenand99 - Jan 1, 2013 at 1:14 AM

      You obviously cared enough to spend time writing that comment.

      • mytthor - Jan 1, 2013 at 11:16 AM

        Though not enough to use the word “have.”

  5. themagicfanguy - Jan 1, 2013 at 12:09 AM

    @spthegr you mean that none of the BANDWAGON fans like yourself care! Plus, they would have won if he even got another FIVE rebounds, ever used math before? Congrats, the heat beat a team that was supposed to be one of the worst teams in the NBA by TWO points. If it wasn’t for some phantom whistles, they wouldn’t have even won! In a few years when you’ve moved on from the heat on to the next bandwagon team, you’ll care when the magic dominate you. This is just the beginning.

    • spthegr8 - Jan 1, 2013 at 6:41 PM

      @magicfatguy
      Figured you would appreciate my “TROLLING”. Being how you & your lil boyfriend Magic”TROLL” LOVE too do the same thing on Laker post. Got ya, got ya!!!

      • spthegr8 - Jan 1, 2013 at 6:55 PM

        @themagicfatguy
        Me a Heat fan??? Wtf, are you new too the site or are you just an idiot???

  6. themagicfanguy - Jan 1, 2013 at 12:10 AM

        Geniuses are a dime a dozen on the Internet these days.

      • eventhorizon04 - Jan 1, 2013 at 2:03 AM

        Nice. Always funny when people tell others they’re wrong without doing a quick Google search to be sure.

  7. btwicey - Jan 1, 2013 at 12:36 AM

    Hahahahahhaha @ Spthegr8 .. What a knob

    • spthegr8 - Jan 1, 2013 at 6:50 PM

      @btwicey
      Thanks. I thought it was pretty funny also. Seems I’ve ruffled some feathers. But FU*K IT!!!! Mission Accomplished!! Still LLS!!! Maybe they will stop “TROLLING” Laker post now. Only problem is the magic SUCK SOOOO BAD. They never write about them on this site, so I don’t have many chances for revenge!!!!

  8. ckinthekc99 - Jan 1, 2013 at 12:46 AM

    Safe to say that Magic got the best of big 4 way deal! Howard has been pretty good, but iguodala hasn’t, & Bynum is doing nothing except growing hair

  9. herkulease - Jan 1, 2013 at 12:48 AM

    You really should read what to write and what you link to.

    “But 29 rebounds is a [bucket] load, and in fact, that number has been matched or exceeded only twice in a game since the 1985-86 season.”

    Odd how in the link you used there are 19 instances where someone grabbed 29+ boards.

    Perhaps you were thinking 20 pts and 29 boards or better as that would bring in Kevin Willis referenced date. But still from the same link, you can easily sort it out and see it had occured 8 times since 85-86. Love, Willis twice, Mutombo twice, Barkley, Oakley, and Herb Williams.

    • eventhorizon04 - Jan 1, 2013 at 2:04 AM

      He probably meant points + rebounds, and even then, as you said, he was wrong.

  10. magicbucs - Jan 1, 2013 at 1:24 AM

    @spthegr8
    14 comments and counting. If you don’t care why did you post a comment you moron. The magic don’t suck. They aren’t that great but they give everything they have and for a very young and injured team I couldn’t be a happier fan with the record they have. The future looks bright for the magic. Can’t say the same for the other teams in that Dwight howard 4 team trade. The magic got the best deal for their future and saved the most $. Lakers are a .500 team, 76ers got screwed, nuggets floating around .500.

    • miamatt - Jan 1, 2013 at 11:20 AM

      I’m obviously no Magic fan but you are totally correct. Orlando has been a pleasant surprise this season, they fight every night.

      I won’t declare the Laker end of the trade dead yet, although things do look promising in that regard :D. Kudos to the Magic for moving on, let’s see how they use those picks and the $$$ they freed up.

  11. 32magicman - Jan 1, 2013 at 1:28 AM

    Wow! Congrats to him on a great night. Will never get the franchise record for biggest $&@!head though. Dwight has that one locked up!

  12. shzastl - Jan 1, 2013 at 5:16 AM

    Wow, sloppy writing. Your link is sorted by POINTS, not rebounds. Only two guys since 85 have had more than 29 POINTS while also grabbing 29+ boards. Rodman alone had multiple 30+ rebound games when he regularly averaged in the high teens. Seems like common sense that any NBA fan worth his salt would know that.

  13. odojoe - Jan 1, 2013 at 11:48 AM

    Dwightmare is real underachiever with rebounds. He should average 30 per game with effort if Rodman could average almost 19 per game.

  14. dubblelznhell - Jan 1, 2013 at 1:58 PM

    Love the hyperbolic word, “shattered”. Lol. Beating a rebound record by one board is hardly shattering anything….

  15. spthegr8 - Jan 1, 2013 at 6:33 PM

    @magic”TROLL”A.k.a EMPEROR of the “TROLLS”
    LMFAO!!! Seems I’ve touched a nerve. Just giving you lil taste of your own medicine. It’s pretty ANNOYING isn’t it???? Happy New year, Although it will be a lot like last year……… Cuz the magic still SUCK!!!! ESAD!!!!!

  16. david407 - Jan 1, 2013 at 6:35 PM

    Who wrote this article? Dennis Rodman has had 30+ several times. Barkley, Mutombo , and Rony Seikley all had 30+ rebound games in the 1990s. Charles Oakley had 35 in 87-88. And then Bynum last year. Do some research buddy!

  17. themagicfanguy - Jan 1, 2013 at 8:29 PM

    Lmao. This dumb troll is talking to himself. So you’re a laker fan eh? Oh good, at least I know I’ll be able to talk a good amount of trash the next time the magic DESTROY the lakers at home… Like they did earlier this season! GET IT?!?
    How’s that Howard trade working out for you? Gotta love it when your super team hangs around .500 all season and misses the playoffs right? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

  18. spthegr8 - Jan 1, 2013 at 9:11 PM

    @magicfatguy
    We wouldn’t want you too think, you might hurt yourself!! Your team is a JOKE!! They ALWAYS have been & the way it looks they ALWAYS will be!! I love how you magic fans act like you didn’t want DH on your team. You are all just bitter that, he said your franchise is a JOKE and will NEVER win a championship. Too call your franchise mediocre is disrespectful too average franchises!!!! You did beat us this year. But we KICKED UR A$$ in the finals a cpl years ago. Remember??? Or are you still trying too forget??? Poor magic fans. Always runner-up, but NEVER A CHAMPION!!!!

  19. themagicfanguy - Jan 2, 2013 at 8:11 AM

    Just like a laker fan to look at a “couple of years ago”! Living in the past wont help your present, you’re team is average at best. You have huge contracts with old and washed up players for the next few years, you’re done. Meanwhile, ORL has young talent and is playing great for a team that was supposed to be the worst, arrow is pointing up for us! We KILLED y’all! In Staples! The Magic did! Accept it, realize that you’re irrelevant for the next few years, and move on.
    It’s all about the banners with Lakers fans… Only until they run into a Celtics fan lol. Love it!

  20. themagicfanguy - Jan 2, 2013 at 8:13 AM

    Speaking of runner up, how’s it feel being runner up in your OWN city? Enjoying being the SECOND best team in LA? Lmao.

  21. spthegr8 - Jan 2, 2013 at 10:33 AM

    Did a orlando magic fan ( a fan that has NEVER seen his team lift the Larry O’brien trophy ) call the Lakers irrelevant??? Pot meet kettle. C’mon you are messing up the rotation, it’s puff puff pass!!!! We won back 2 back championships 3 years ago. It really wasn’t that long ago. I know being a magic fan makes you block out painful memories, so it’s easy too forget that. Your franchise has NEVER done ANYTHING worth while, that’s why you tried too suck off the Celtic’s. It shows how PATHETIC your franchise truly is because, you magic fans act like you won the finals beating the Lakers in a regular season game. Trying too compare your franchise too mine isn’t apple’s too oranges. Ya’ll aren’t even CLOSE!!!! & YOU KNOW IT!!!!! You have the nerve too talk about “runner-up”???? Really??? Why don’t you let me know, how it feels. The heat won a championship already. Have the magic??? You don’t have too answer that question. We ALL KNOW THE ANSWER!!!!

  22. themagicfanguy - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:20 PM

    Actually it’s pretty easy to compare the teams, especially when they have already played each other. Hmm… How’d that turn out again? So they won a few years ago? Does anybody besides Laker fans care? Not really. The Mavs won a couple of years ago, look at em now! Same with the Pistons! Remember when the Kings were good? Yeah, things change. Lakers suck now, they can’t even beat the team you’re talking trash about, “irrelevant” you said, on their home court! It’s okay, I know it hurts that you’re team is doomed to be terrible for a few seasons, they’ll get back to winning once Nash and Kobe and MWP and Gasol are gone. It’s a good thing you’re getting your crying done now, because you’re stuck with em for a bit. Meanwhile the Magic will just keep killing y’all, since its become so easy these days :)
