I meant to say that Joe Johnson can be a productive player, and because of that, trading for him wasn't stupid. It's possible that acquiring him wasn't the smartest move, but it wasn't stupid. There was reason to think it could work(and it still could).

Even if my response wasn't perfectly written, I think it was understandable, rational, and much more respectful than yours. I was honestly hoping to talk about this in a respectful way, but you seem to be more interested in making fun of me than anything else, so I guess that won't be possible.

You said:
It wasn’t the stupidest trade in recent memory. Joe Johnson can be productive, but not in any system. It might have been a bad trade anyway, but far from the worst. And even if it was the worst, that’s not what we’re discussing here.

WHAT !!!!! Aahahahahahahaha

Dude, I don't know what the rest of your paragraph was about. I didn't make it past this convoluted/ confused/ irrational attempt at a response! ahahaha

I don't believe you know what you meant to say.....ahahahahahahaha

Hughes was the biggest gamble in the draft. He had 1 mildly impressive season in college against mediocre competition, and had a irregular heart issue pop up right before the draft. His upside was as a scoring guard with defensive issues, basically an AI light

They also played T Thomas almost exclusively at the 4. But much more importantly, traded him to Milwaulkee after Hughes rookie year, so it's not like they were married to him

1. It wasn't the stupidest trade in recent memory. Joe Johnson can be productive, but not in any system. It might have been a bad trade anyway, but far from the worst. And even if it was the worst, that's not what we're discussing here. We're talking about whether firing Avery was the right move, not about the Nets' past moves. They have made quite a few mistakes before now, and they'd certainly be in better shape if they hadn't, but they made them, and they have to find a way to solve the problem and at least become respectable. Firing Avery is a step in that direction.

2. Basketball is a team sport, not just a business. Nearly every player that isn't top 8 or top 10 in the league needs a certain kind of system and/or team to play to their full potential. This same problem happened with Carmelo Anthony when he played under D'Antoni, with Jeremy Lin when he played under Woodson, with Pau Gasol when he tried to play in Mike Brown's offense, with OJ Mayo when he tried to play in Hollins' offense, and many others. The Nets' perimeter offensive players have been playing in an offense that limits their strengths and exposes their weaknesses. Deron Williams and Joe Johnson will not succeed trying to take their man off the dribble every time down the court. If you put them in a motion offense that helps them get open looks, however, they will dominate, and be among the most productive guards in the league.

Steve Nash is widely recognized as one of the best point guards of his generation. Before going to Phoenix and playing in Mike D'Antoni's system, he was nothing special. He found a system that was perfect for him, and became a great player. If you put him on the Nets' turtle-like offense, he'd struggle.

There are more examples of this, and I'll list them if it's necessary, but I think it's clear that players have strengths and weaknesses, and offensive systems and strategies exist to showcase the former and hide the latter. If a system doesn't fit with the players' skills, they will struggle and the team will lose(Unless they are absolute superstars like LeBron James and Kevin Durant. They can succeed in any system)

3. Deron Williams and Joe Johnson are not very flashy. They don't do a lot of "trick shots". The attention they have gotten has come from their production on the court. They have been both overrated and underrated at different points, but that hasn't had much to do with trick shots.

When he was in Utah, before he injured his wrist, Deron Williams was the second best point guard in the league. He was a very productive, efficient player and led one of the best offenses in the league, with the help of an all-time great coach's offensive system. Stats and video can easily prove that.

He actually got less attention than most all-stars due to the size of the market he played in. So your "trick shot" argument has no basis in reality when it comes to Deron Williams

Joe Johnson has been a very good player, and has had some rightful all-star seasons. He has also been inconsistent, and hasn't displayed the talent necessary to be the leader of an elite offense. That said, he's been just short of that at times, and he was very productive in Phoenix next to Nash and Stoudemire, in a fast-paced system that helped showcase his strengths.

4. How do you know Joe Johnson is scared? Can you prove that he actually plays worse against elite players?

Why do you say Carmelo Anthony is an elite player, when he was awful last season when forced to play in a system that didn't fit his skills? You seem to think that professional star players should be able to dominate regardless of the system they play in, but Carmelo doesn't seem to be capable of that.

5. Yes, Deron Williams has been talking more than he should, and he has been more talk than substance since going to the Nets. I don't think it started there, though. He's always been outspoken about what he likes and doesn't like. The difference is that he's not producing anymore, so his words make him look worse than they did before.

Brandon Jennings played better than him once. That doesn't mean anything. Brandon Jennings has been an inefficient gunner since he entered the league.

There are definitely weaknesses in Deron Williams' game, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have star talent. He does. His poor play has had a lot to do with his coach, and his injured wrist as well.

Actually Avery Johnson got off too easy. As far as the players are concerned the Russian owner will shake off his bad investments very quickly because the players will magically vanish without the trace buried under some scrap yard in Brooklyn.
The Nets and their billionaire owner failed to understand the true impact of the new CBA. Prokhorov -- no doubt confident in his ability to pay any cost -- dove wallet-first into this season, overpaying everybody, heedless of the CBA consequences. They are all finding out now that their hands will be tied, and that they can't buy their way out of this mess.

Success under the new CBA, from now on, will rely on teams' ability to extract maximum talent from more-limited budgets and tighter trading rules. Those who play that game well – like OKC with the Harden trade – will thrive. Those who ignore the rules of the game – like the Nets have – will fail, in this case spectacularly.

@MSP0818 -- you wrote: "Williams may be a “coach killer” or whatever people want to call him but he also is a very good point guard whose opinion should matter for whatever team he is playing."

Having your opinion "matter" sounds reasonable, and is reasonable. But unfortunately, it's irrelevant here -- because the problems in Brooklyn are MUCH deeper than whether or not they're listening to Williams' "opinions."

Being a "coach killer" -- a designation which Williams has now clearly earned -- is so much worse than opinion-mattering, it's ridiculous to even discuss it. The problem in Brooklyn is CLEARLY DWILL, a whining loser who will deflect all blame onto his coach 100% of the time when something -- anything -- goes wrong.

Williams has some PG skills, no question. But he hasn't the heart and head of a winner, nor the character of an aardvark. Winners admit when they're screwing up and seek ways to improve. DWill's modus operandi is the exact opposite.

More FAKER logic !

You are not worried.....GREAT !

At the rate the FAKERS are getting pounded, you won't have to get worried because you won't have a remote chance of making the playoffs anyway....ahahahaha

Last nights game against the Nuggets (with your full roster intact) exposed all the flaws, most of us predicted at the beginning of the season:

If you expect Nash at 39 to be your savior, that's even better !

1. Nash can't continue to put up 30+ minutes every night, or he will be injured again
2. Nash has ZERO chance of checking ANY of the guards in the West. Ty Lawson had his LUNCH last night. Never mind trying to check CP3, Parker, Westbrook, Lillard etc. etc. etc.

3. Howard never learned to play on-the-ball defense or to properly rotate. His defense is limited to playing out of position, to get a few highlight blocks
4. Fake MJ/ Harlem Globetrotter won't stop taking ill advised shots that disrupt any possibility of developing an offensive flow.
5. I won't even mention that bench, most WNBA teams will beat.....ahahahaa

But if you are not worried........COOL !

Now most Faker fans want the new coach fired.....ahahahahahahahaha !

You are in NO position to give opinions or advice pertaining to how to handle coaching decisions vs personnel issues! ahahahahahaha

Who the Fakers gonna get SPANKED by next....I can't wait !

This makes ZERO sense .....Nobasketballthing !!!

1. It was the STOOPEDEST (it's a word cause I said it) trade in recent memory to take on that Joe Johnson contract ! The folk in Atlanta are still laughing !
Joe Johnson makes more than LBJ, WADE, Bosh, Durant and many others....REALLY !!! that was a good move by the ownership .....not AVERY !

2. Find a system to fit their play ! Well that's asinine ! The "PROFESSIONAL" basketball players are supposed to have the ability to run the offense/ defense the coach implements ! Not vice versa.
That's like a corporation building it's business plan around the employees, as opposed to the business strategy designed and approved by the board (in this case ownership).

3. You said "but when they are in the right system, they play like stars " ....playing like stars and doing a few trick shots to get on SI, will not get you to the championships !

What I've seen is:

4. Joe Johnson is still scared to step up and face challenges from elite players. Joe is being paid "Elite Player Money" but he only plays like he is a role player. He has ZERO aggression and typically becomes a coward, when he plays against Elite players (LBJ, Durant, Melo etc).

5. I used to be a D.Will fan BUT since he's been in NY, he's developed that NY Fat Mouth syndrome...More talk than substance !
Then I watched Brandon Jennings OWN him !!!! BJ exposed so many weaknesses in his game, which makes it apparent, D Will needs to work on his game....It has NOTHIN to do with the coach !

I hope Avery gets one of those deals like Mike Brown got from the lakers....where he can get paid to chill the next several years, after being publicly disrespected like this !
