It’s official: Pau Gasol back, to start for Lakers Tuesday

Dec 18, 2012, 2:16 PM EDT

In the eight games Pau Gasol sat out resting knee tendonitis, the Lakers went 3-5 and looked sloppy most of the time — their defensive rotations sagged to the point of nonexistent and on offense no Gasol (and Steve Nash) meant the ball more in Kobe Bryant’s hands. Which meant more Kobe Bryant shots.

We’ll see how much that changes when Pau Gasol returns to the lineup Tuesday night. As was expected, Mike D’Antoni made it official on Tuesday at shootaround, according to Lakers reporter Mike Trudell.

While there are plenty of questions about how well Gasol fits in D’Antonni’s system — he is not a classic stretch four by any means — it was impossible to judge with pre-rest Gasol. His knees were making him a step slow, he was missing bunnies at the rim all the time and you almost never saw multiple efforts out of him on a play.

If his knees are back, then we can see how Gasol fits the system. The Lakers clearly missed his passing, his length and defense inside and his rebounding. He’s also an unselfish player and the Lakers could use that balance on the floor.

The Lakers play Tuesday against the Bobcats, then are off until a Saturday game in Golden State, allowing time for Gasol to recover. Then the Lakers play the Knicks on Christmas day in a nationally televised game.

The Lakers may have Nash back for those last two games as well, he is targeting a Saturday return.

The Lakers’ success has closely mirrored Gasol’s presence and success for the past six years, so hopefully he’s better now than he was earlier this year if LA is to move up in the West.

I hope they use this guy the right way.
I hope the coach is not stubborn and refuses to use this guy in a offense that
can capitalize on his size down low with Howard.

This guy is a champ, is the coach gonna be a chump, the coach will feel the heat
because people in LA are not very happy!

The headline should read “It’s official, lakers will still suck with Gasol back in the starting lineup”

      o wait…that wasn’t funny.

    • zblott - Dec 18, 2012 at 5:04 PM

      They’re 8-9 with Gasol and 3-5 without.

I sure hope the Bucs go on a winning streak so you can have something else to live for other than the Lakers’ struggles. Sadly, with their total lack of talent, that won’t happen.

Poor magic bung…his Team is 0-2 when it matters most, in the Finals. Come back when your team has even one title.

Winning one title isn’t even enough. They’ might be accused of being a one-hit wonder. How about upping the ante for good measure and make it a back-to-back?

      • bozosforall - Dec 19, 2012 at 11:46 PM

        Right you are.

NBA Championships are won in June. You can ask Kobe, Gasol, and World Peace..Nash is on his way too then everything will be back to normal on the quest for #17..Wow! 17 Round balls is a lot! Most of the people worried about LA and criticizing every game have never experienced a Championship in thier own cities so they always keep an eye on The Lakers.

Lol, you said they were 3-5 without him as is they missed his presence.

they were 8-9 with him and everyone was complaining.
