Quote of the Day: Like all of us, Kobe is confused by Bynum’s hair

Dec 17, 2012, 10:05 AM EDT

Andrew Bynum hair

“I don’t know what he’s doing with that perm.”

Kobe Bryant‘s comments on Andrew Bynum, via Kevin Ding of the Orange County Register.

The comments came after the Lakers win Sunday evening over the 76ers. It was also after Bynum suggested playing with Kobe stunted his growth as a player and might do the same for Dwight Howard. To be fair, we should note Bynum only kept that perm thing one game. Thank Buddha.

can bynum just let the world know what hes going to do with it? i thought at first the fro was a nod to dr j…now its like a nod to katt williams

I think he is doing it strategically, at 7ft tall he is pretty damn hard to see over to begin with, adding another two or three inches of afro will make it even harder. And how sweet would it be if he blocked a shot with it?

    Warning: Off topic.
Bill Russell was barely 6’9″ in his playing days. True story.

Apparently you don’t keep up with American slang.

      • scalfor3 - Dec 18, 2012 at 11:36 AM

Hahah yeah, in that context “dope” meant “awesome”

    • eventhorizon04 - Dec 18, 2012 at 1:02 AM

Dwight Howard is described as a “7-footer” when he’s barely over 6’9″.

There’s a lot of “rounding up” when it comes to NBA player’s heights.

      • davidly - Dec 18, 2012 at 10:25 AM

So I guess Russell was only 6’6″. Or maybe they didn’t round up as much then. But at any rate, he listed as 6’9″ whereas Chamberlain list at 7″1′. And the Stilt was no slouch.

Also, scalfor3 is right: Bill Russell was dope.

My father used to say, “it doesn’t matter what’s on top of your head, it matters what’s inside of it”. Personally, I think this kid is a little off mentally, possibly. Or, he’s just tired of playing basketball and being the “bread winner” since he first joined the league. It must have gotten and still continues to be exhausting having to do that at his age, especially when everyone from his friends to his family knows how much money he’s making all the time.

    1/3 ‘fro. + 1/3 bowl cut + 1/3 perm = a very bad look

    • badintent - Dec 18, 2012 at 1:23 AM

He got it at Jimmy Kimmel’s barbershop in LA. It was their way of sending him off to Philly.

He reminds me of the fat dweeb from “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”…..
