Raptors’ Amir Johnson gets off light, one game suspension

Dec 12, 2012, 1:28 AM EDT

Generally, if you get in a wrestling match over a ball with a referee then, when ejected, you take your mouthpiece and throw it at him, you are lined up for more than one game of suspension.

But the Raptors Amir Johnson admitted afterward that he was “childish” and apologized, and with that he got off pretty light — a one game suspension by the league.

Johnson will miss the Raptors game Wednesday against Brooklyn.

The entire incident was silly — it’s not uncommon for referees to let players touch the ball between free throws, referee David Jones didn’t want to do that in this case. No idea why. It’s silly of Jones to make a big deal of it, it was silly for Johnson to demand it, try to wrestle the ball away then snap when he got a tech for it.

But the silliness of the thing combined with an apology means Johnson threw his mouthpiece and hit a referee and only got one game. It could have been much worse.

It’s not like he punched or put his hands on the ref. Anything more than a game wouldve been ridiculous.

No, he just threw something at him, that’s all. Should’ve gotten more.

A tiny mouthpiece that would barely get a reaction out of a small infant child? I know its the principle of him throwing something at a ref, but that’s making a mountain out of a molehill here and the league would come off as dictatorial if they give him a ridiculous 3-5 game suspension, especially since he apologized shortly after the game. A massive fine and a game suspension is more than enough.

what did you want them to do, tie him to a lamp post and beat him with 2 x 4………

why did the ref have to deny him the ball, he is a ballplayer, so he has to have the ball to play.

hellooooooooooooooooooooooooo….. you need the ball to play the game!

Was an awkward, weird exchange. Amir apologized immediately. What else is there to do?

evilempire, he don’t need to have the ball when the ref is trying to bounce it to the free throw shooter. It wasn’t his turn, or have you still not grasped that concept.

I was afraid they were going to make an example out of him and give him 5, I would have been happy with 2 or 3, just getting one does seems a little light, but not bad.
