Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins suspended one game for hitting O.J. Mayo in groin

Dec 12, 2012, 5:12 PM EDT

DeMarcus Cousins says what happened between he and O.J. Mayo was incidental and accidental. You watch the video above and tell that’s what you see, because I don’t. I see an intentional move.

The league saw it as intentional and has suspended Cousins one game, it announced Wednesday afternoon. Cousins will be forced to sit Wednesday when the Kings play the Bucks.

The hit caused Mayo to say Cousins has “mental issues” and generally slam Cousins. Of course, that is a little of the pot calling the kettle black, which is what Cousins said in his response.

But the bottom line is it was a punch to the groin that is going to cost Cousins a game and a game check.

Yeah that looked really intentional. Mayo’s groin was literally inches away and there’s no way Cousins wasn’t aware of it.

usually I disagree with fines and suspensions because they’re way too stern…

this one, i think, is too lenient.

you don’t hit a man in the groin, it’s just not cool and this was just too blatant.

i think they should have suspended him for 3-5 games.

Are you talking about where OJ says he’s an allstar caliber talent and can be the face of the franchise every other sentence? Far from slamming a guy who just intentionally punched you in the junk. Pretty nice of him actually.

This happens all the time in the NBA. Not sure why its such a huge story. Suspend him, but then suspend others who do the same thing in the future. If the league had more consistent discipline for these type of acts, punishments would serve as much more effective deterrents.

Garnett has done this numerous times to players over the years and has never been suspended for it.
