I think the game is different. A lot more young talent, international talent. The game is smaller and less physical. The playoffs are longer. Depth matters more.

Kobe has 5 rings (3 with Shaq) and 1 MVP. Even if he wins 1 more ring, he won’t ever be MJ (with 6 and 6).

Lebron got to the Finals 3 times and won 1 (with Bosh and Wade). Has 3 MVPs and could easily win a 4th this year. It will be tough for him to get the titles MJ had.

Jordan always believed he was the best player on the court, and because of his background of training and working on his game throughout his career, he was usually right.

However, when he became a GM with no real background in player evaluation, that self-confidence became a problem. You don’t necessarily need a lot of experience in player evaluation to become a good GM, but you do need to be willing to listen to expert opinions from people such as scouts. Unfortunately, Jordan would regularly ignore scouting reports and “fall in love” with certain prospects that he met, and he’d refuse to listen to doubters. Charles Barkley has talked about how everybody on Jordan’s staff were “Yes-Men” who had figured out that the trick to career advancement was to agree with Jordan, not to challenge him.

Now that Jordan has finally taken a step back and let a professional handle personnel, the Bobcats actually look like they’ve put together a decent roster.
