I would like to agree. But I think they will be a border line playoff team, and a 1-and-done because of the playoff seeding. This team has to go 41-22 the rest of the way just to get to 50 wins, and I see nothing in their inconsistent play that makes me think it is a foregone conclusion that they will even make it to 50. They have played a home-heavy, lousy-team filled schedule thus far, and they still have a losing record.

Paul, I know that the Lakers are at a disadvantage age wise but being in your 30′s does not make you old and the system that D’Antoni is pushing requires more ball movement than player movement, they just have to know what spots to move to, to get open looks and that has nothing to do with age and even young players can keep up with tactical ball movement and Miami isn’t really a young team and as far as the Lakers losing to OKC, if it weren’t for a few TO’s, OKC could have been watching the playoffs at home, so I wouldn’t call the Lakers out of it so quickly, (Dallas is proof of that !!)

Paul hits it on the head….youth in reserves or key spots is key. Yes you need vets…think the Spurs didnt this 5th wind for another chance on the ancient legs of Duncan without Splitter Green and Leonard? Throw in Gary Neal as well.

Defensively age is a number that cant be overcome especially in transition defense.

Basketball 101 is penetration breaks down any defense. The Lakers are horrid on the perimeter. The other night Toney Douglas looked like he NBA Jam turbo on at the end of the game. Mike Conley went to town on the Lakers probing for the top of the key and off pick and rolls. Even a second tier PG like George Hill got the corner on a pick and roll and you saw what happened.

But again Laker fans dont let basketball sense get in the way of fantasy land.

6 out of the 1st 9 in the lakers rotation are 30 and over.
The thing you aren’t getting is that the teams you mentioned had QUALITY depth.
lakers age + d league depth = early exit.
OKC had zero trouble with LA last year.

They WILL get run out of the building.

this youth argument you have going is a myth…..young teams dont advance in the playoffs and if they do they dont win it, see: memphis, clippers, 6ers…..OLD TEAMS full of veteran players win NBA titles, see: MIA over OKC, DAL over MIA, Celtics over the lakers in 2008, LAL over the magic in 2009….need i continue? so u can knock it off with the they’re too old thing, its getting kinda…..old. Secondly, Shane Battier and udonis haslem to my knowledge are/were starters..so since when werent starters major contributors?

He is to valuable to make a rash decision, when the team hasn’t even had a chance to really play together. Even though we want wins now, we know we haven’t gotten a sense of what the team is going to look like by the time all star break rolls around..

luda: I see where you are trying to go in comparison to the 08 Celtics. It just doesn’t wash though.
Allen was 33 that year. Pierce and Garnett 31. Everyone I mentioned outside of Gasol and Howard are older than Allen.

Perkins 24, BigBaby22, Rondo 22 Tony Allen 26. The Lakers youth is not there, what is is borderline.
When Healthy, 2 of the best 3 guys off the bench are in their 30s also, Hill has to be pushing 30 too.(not sure of his age).

This team, as assembled has pieces that don’t fit, Gasol will not bring equal value in return. It’s old. Bring in more age off the bench(which is d league level at best).

It’s pooy constructed and not built to keep up with the more athletic WC teams.

It’s not hate, I don’t hate the lakers. It’s some of the fans I detest.
I’m just being a realist. A lot of lakers fan dont know the meaning of that word.

Look at the stats for Boston in their championship year – Pierce averaged over 37 MPG, Allen 35, and Garnett over 31. It’s not like they were resting all that much more, even if their bench was better.

Every time the talk of moving Gasol comes up, the answer is always the same: They’d never get anybody of equal value in return, making it stupid to move him. Gasol would have value to a team who’s a piece away from contending for a title, but that’s a short list and none of those teams would give up a core player to get him. For the lower-tier teams, Gasol is only a good option if they could get him for a steal because he’s not the sort of guy you can really use as centerpiece in rebuilding a team.

What were the ages of the Bulls team in 97? Here I’ll help – Jordan was 34, Pippen was 31, Kerr was 31, Rodman was 35, Harper was 33, How about the Celtics when they won it all a few years back? Most of their important players were over 30.

It’s not that age doesn’t matter, the Lakers aren’t young. It’s just that this team isn’t as old as everyone makes them out to be (outside of Nash) when comparing them to other championship teams. And Nash hasn’t had that many missed games due to not being healthy over the last few seasons. Pau doesn’t have a history of bad knees, but he hasn’t rested them enough over the last few years in the offseason like he should have been.

The Heat are definitely in a better situation going forward, but it remains to be seen how long that core can be kept together once extensions are due. It still is significant that the Heat didn’t play well early on either. It was a different situation, but it still goes to show that teams with complimentary stars don’t always mesh quickly. The Lakers haters hope this team will never mesh, but chances are good that they’ll get it together and do pretty well. We’ll see if they can avoid major injuries.

it does mean something PH…i know you hate them…and yes, they are floundering…but that didn’t mean they were going to be bad. i have been to vegas sevral times…actually, did most of my betting when in Tahoe or Reno…i know what odds are about.

Come on guys! All you have to do is look at the rosters of the other conference teams. Look at Memphis, Denver, Oklahoma City and right in your backyard with the Clippers.
All their skill players, the main guys, are all under 30, in some cases way under. Randolph in Memphis and Crawford with the Clips being the exceptions.

The Lakers roster, starting lineup wise averages 33 years old. Jamison is 36, Blake is getting up there.

Yes other teams ARE younger, more athletic than the lakers. They also have better and deeper benches.
Contrary to the belief in lakerland, benches DO go 9-10 deep in the playoffs. Depth does matter.
This laker team was built to fail from the get go. old and no depth =early playoff exit. Any deep, uptempo team will bury these guys in a series.

They aren’t spring chickens, but they are also not expected to be major contributors. Big difference between having a 30+ role player versus a 30+ starter. No matter how you slice it this Laker team is not that similar to the Heat from two seasons ago.

2. Nobody said the lakers would NEVER want to trade Pau. But nobody is running through the halls screaming it like Kurt constantly suggests. While people get frustrated with Pau’s lack of energy/softness at times, they are too many other things to factor in right now to blame it all on Pau.
