when david schtern was told by george shinn back in 2010 that his hornets were going bankrupt and the team would be sold and likley relocated, schtern stepped in because he knows brand value in the name hornets. his first thought was to gain a local to keep the name, couldnt find one, but bensons money was there under a few guidlines (a) name change (b) anthony david (c) host all star for a second time in less then 5 years. schtern dispatched adam silver to charlotte in april 2012 with the offer for jordan in exchange for the BRAND of “charlotte hornets” back. it took 3.5 seconds for jordan, coming off the worst record in NBA history, to say “yes”.

since schtern owed the naming rights to “charlotte hornets” as part of the stewardship of the franchise from 2010 to 2012, all those bullshit fees go out the window, along with the due process of 2 years waiting and setting things up.

again, the news of pelicans is actually just a forgone conclusion to a deal that took place in the spring. charlotte hornets 2.0 happens October 31, 2013 in the season opener.

Utah is the “Beehive State” so Utah Hornets makes sense, and the Big Easy would get the New Orleans Jazz back.

Same with so many other teams. Imagine starting a baseball team an naming them after a pair of red or white socks. And then trying to make it sound cooler by spelling “socks” with an “x”.

But then again it is fun goofing on the name “Pelicans”, and leave it to LeBatard to pour a big bucket of water over the small flame of fun we’re having with it.

As far as new name suggestions, I do like the Jesters- fits the Mard Gras theme and is unique. In the end though, any name is a good one if the team is winning.

The Jesters would be a fitting name since the New Orleans franchise is the joke of the NBA. If some idiots proposed Brass then why not Beads? I mean we could have some real fun getting to rename the Hornets.

Make sure the name is cool first and foremost and will give rise to a cool mascot. Remember the team will have to have a mascot and a pelican mascot would be the joke of the world.

You know the idiots who run the Hornets, that would be you idiot Stern, should stop wasting time on stupid names and spend more time brining in great players and a top flight coach. Oh by the way, the Lakers will be dumping their coach soon so heads up on that score.
