Bogut had microfracture surgery on ankle; may be out months more

UPDATE 5:07 pm: Andrew Bogut and Warriors GM Bob Meyers met with the media on Wednesday afternoon to try and clear the air, to say they were all on the same page and always have been. That they knew it would take time for Bogut’s ankle to heal after a serious surgery and there was never any timetable from the organization, no pressure for him to return. Sure.

But what also caught my eye was this quote, from the San Jose Mercury News:

Asked whether he thought his season might be in jeopardy, Bogut said he thinks he will return — though it could take “one, two or three months.”

Great. Just great.

2:57 pm: Well, this explains better what is going on with Andrew Bogut and his slower-than-expected return from ankle surgery last April. It also raises questions of why the Warriors keep coming up with artificial timelines, but we’ll get to that.

The Warriors had said Bogut went in just to have his ankle scoped and some debris removed, but that’s not what happened once the doctor was inside reports Marcus Thompson at the Contra Costa Times (via CSNBayArea.com).

Bogut, on the other hand, went in to get his left ankle cleaned out of scar tissue and bone fragments. When Dr. Richard Ferkel was inside, he noticed a “minor” cartilage issue and he addressed it with a form of microfracture surgery. The major part of the surgery, the source said, was cleaning out the debris.

The important thing, another source said, is the microfracture surgery part of the procedure was accounted for when Ferkel gave the Warriors his timetable for Bogut’s return.

What timeline? A clearly frustrated with how this is going down Bogut said Tuesday there is no timeline.

First off, Warriors, just admit what happened up front and fans can deal with it. I get both Bogut and the Warriors wanted to get back as soon as possible, so you both suggested very optimistic timelines, but you can’t rush these things if you are in for the long term. Leading fans on with “oh, it was just a scope job and he’ll be back at the start of the season” raises false expectations. Same with saying he’d be out 7-10 days when he pulled himself out after four games.

What should the expectations be now? Who knows? Bogut doesn’t. The Warriors don’t. Maybe it’s a couple of weeks. Maybe it’s close to Christmas. Maybe it’s in 2013. The Warriors need him back, but back healthy.

It’s better to accept the uncertainty than to put false deadlines out there.
