Agree on this one, Borderline … the problem is that offensive players often initiate contact. How often does a defensive player get called when his arms are straight up and a driving player brushes his chest without the defensive player moving?

Paul Pierce also loves to run through a pick on the perimeter and then scream likes he’s been shot and fall down. That’s the stuff that needs to be called. Or rebounders (like Evans) who try to draw fouls by pretending to be pushed under the basket.

They shouldn’t give warnings when a player is driving to the basket, unless it’s ridiculously blatant. It’s the stupid perimeter stuff or positional rebounding stuff that drives me crazy.

Agreed – it doesn’t make sense to give technicals for flops in a game.

And the fines do start to accumulate for repeat offenders…could be $30k (which is the level Evans will likely be at in a few weeks). $30k is enough to make Reggie Evans think twice.

The annoying thing is that the league is going after the fringe players. The NBA really likes to protect and market its stars…so they are loathe to warn any of them. I’m waiting for that to happen.

Wade isn’t that bad in my opinion…he always just drives hard into contact (at the rim) and tries to sell it by not landing on his feet. But at least he’s driving hard to the basket with traffic. Part of basketball fundamentals is to drive hard and look for contact.

Guys like Chris Paul routinely fake being hit when they’re not being touched, or pretend to lose their balance or trip when running through a pick. That’s more of the stuff I’d like to see being called.

Can you imagine how horrible it would be if someone got a tech for flopping in a game when they really didn’t, and it was at a crucial time in the game?

A tech would have more of an effect than a pocket-change fine. But as you point out, you can’t really judge a flop during a game w/o slowing the game to a crawl.

They determine if they are flops after the game. The technical wouldn’t have much effect. In realtime, it’s tough to tell if it’s a flop.

They should make flopping an automatic technical foul. That would be more of a penalty than $5k to a multimillionaire.

Players will get a warning the first time, then be fined $5,000 for a second violation. The fines increase to $10,000 for a third offense, $15,000 for a fourth and $30,000 for the fifth. Six or more could lead to a suspension.
