Report: Darko Milicic may leave Celtics to return to Europe, sick mother

After a preseason when Celtics fans were high on him (this is why we say don’t read much into those games), Darko Milicic has been a non-factor for the Celtics. He played five minutes in the season opener and hasn’t sniffed the court since.

Part of it is his mind is elsewhere — with his sick mother back in Europe.

And he may leave the Celtics to go back to be closer to his mother, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

Milicic, the No. 2 overall pick in the famed 2003 NBA Draft, didn’t travel with the Celtics to Detroit this weekend, and sources say that he’s close to deciding to leave the NBA for the season to be with his ill mother in Serbia. After failing to play since opening night, After failing to play since opening night, Milicic has also been frustrated with his lack of a role with the Celtics, sources said….

Boston coach Doc Rivers met with Milicic recently and told him to take time to make a decision on his family and future, sources said. Milicic had been productive in the preseason, but has fallen behindJason Collins in the Celtics’ rotation.

First things first, we wish Milicic, his mother and their family the best. That is what really is important, not basketball.

That said, you get the feeling if Darko heads to Europe he will not be back in the NBA ever. He has flirted with the idea in recent years but stayed this year to play with Boston, except he can’t get on the court with a team and coach that demands focus and attention to detail from its players.

But if Darko does leave, who fills the spot?

The obvious name on the market is Kenyon Martin, and he would certainly bring more than Milicic has to the table. He’s also a four, not a five, and would make the Celtics smaller. But there are not quality seven footers on the free agent market, and the Celtics sent Fab Melo to the D-League because he has a lot of work to do before he could help a veteran contender.

He may leave? I thought he left weeks ago!! He had the talent but Darko never had the heart for the NBA. There goes the Celtics depth and size. #deadman walking

    • mrcuret - Nov 19, 2012 at 5:21 PM

He probably has more heart than Gasol & Howard together. Gasol is soft when they play him physical & Dwight, well… he’s just a diva. And don’t worry about the Celtics depth, they’re either going to sign K Mart or trade for Gortat.

      • Justin - Nov 19, 2012 at 7:13 PM

You must not watch basketball. Darko is terrible…

  2. readysethike - Nov 19, 2012 at 5:03 PM

i think they have a better chance and depth bringing in a slightly younger and hungrier eddy curry then kenyon…but i’m not sure if eddy is still available since he was released by dallas

  3. lakerluver - Nov 19, 2012 at 5:36 PM

Hahahahaha!!! Dude, stop it, you’re killing me!! Dwight and Pau are both HOF’ers!!…Darko is one of the biggest busts in NBA history. Ask the Celtics how much heart Pau has. He outplayed Boston’s entire frontline in 2010. Oh, I forgot, the great Kendrick Perkins was hurt! Boston is done. Prepare yourself for irrelevancy because as soon as KG and Paul retire that’s exactly what Boston will be facing. Just like it was from the time Bird retired until 2008 when KG & Ray Ray revived an irrelevant franchise. #deadman walking

    • genericcommenter - Nov 19, 2012 at 7:04 PM

Pau is far from a sure HOF player.

      • limonadamas - Nov 20, 2012 at 1:33 AM

Do you know anything about the Basketball HOF? Pau gets in on his international resume alone, not to mention his NBA career.

      • genericcommenter - Nov 20, 2012 at 7:32 AM

Yes, I do. Now that you put it that way, who am I to argue?

  4. paulhargis53 - Nov 19, 2012 at 5:53 PM

He hasn’t hardly played. I told you before the season, he might see 10 minutes a game. He wasn’t even seeing that. It’s a stretch for you to even think he will be missed.
You know, you whine when I rip on you, then you keep poking the bear when I don’t. You need to make up your mind you psychopath.

Only you would make a big deal about a 3rd stronger leaving the team. #squishmitten #8yearold

  5. lakerluver - Nov 19, 2012 at 6:14 PM

“Rip me”? I own you, sir. When Boston signed Darko I criticized them. No coach has ever gotten Darko to play to his potential. He belongs in Europe. He stole millions from the NBA based on his “potential”. Darko’s leaving, Melo can’t play, Sully is average at best and KG is old. And you asked why I changed my prediction of Boston playing in the Finals!

“After a preseason when Celtics fans were high on him”

I think this site is the biggest to blame. All the talk about him in a Celtics environment and how Doc Rivers could transform him. I didn’t hear it much from Celtics fans. Mostly just here.

  7. paulhargis53 - Nov 19, 2012 at 7:57 PM

Own me?! hahahahaha…Uff. Dude, what color is the sky in your world?

I’ve verbally ripped you a new one on a daily basis.

I’d say I’ve made you look stupid, but you do that quite well yourself.

Think about this and who owns who numbnuts, you’re the one who is now hashtagging me with your idiocy in every post. If that doesn’t scream that I am in your head, I don’t know what does.

To the point of the article, he isn’t contributing much, if he did contribute, it was bonus. It’s not like he was expected to post double digits in any stats.

You’re a 38 year old hero worshipping, homeristic, imbecile.

    • bozosforall - Nov 19, 2012 at 10:07 PM

Lakers…five titles in the 2000s. Puh C’s…a measly one, that coming after a quarter century of futility.

You lose, Pudhummer53…just like in every other way of your miserable life.

      • scalfor3 - Nov 19, 2012 at 11:28 PM

        You all are idiots

      • bozosforall - Nov 20, 2012 at 10:00 PM

The only idiots here are you Boston jerk wads. Your team will make you all look like the fools that you are.

  8. cdins - Nov 19, 2012 at 8:19 PM

    Who wears #99?

  9. paulhargis53 - Nov 19, 2012 at 8:41 PM

Hall of famer George Mikan wore #99.

    Know your NBA history….

  10. j0esixpack - Nov 19, 2012 at 10:21 PM

Ah – all is in balance in the universe again. A Celtics or other New England sports thread pops up and a homophobic guy who apparently strongly identifies with men who wear makeup feels compelled to tell others that they have a pathetic life.

Let’s give the clown credit for being ironically hilarious even if he doesn’t realize it!

  11. paulhargis53 - Nov 19, 2012 at 10:43 PM

    Don’t mind bozosforall/lakerluver.

He’s an integrate that had those 2 screen names plus at least 1 more. It’s pretty funny that he equates a sports team he has nothing to do with, but watching with being a winner or a loser.

He has to settle for men, he hasn’t had Puh c since Puh c had him.

He’s to be pitied. His life is PBT.

He’s a guy in his mid 30s worshipping sports players. His love of large sweaty men is very weird. Everytime he sees a picture of Kobe or Howard, he goes from 6 to midnite in his pants.

    What a sad, creepy man.

    • mytthor - Nov 20, 2012 at 1:08 AM

His life is PBT, and your life is stalking him on PBT. Every time he posts you have your nose in his ass. Get a life, both of you.

  12. money2long - Nov 19, 2012 at 10:55 PM

aww, we’re not going to get to see a darko vs detroit showdown ?? i bought tickets solely to see darko play against the team that drafted him. bummer.

on a more serious note, get well soon mrs darko

  13. lakerluver - Nov 20, 2012 at 12:03 AM

I concur, they are all idiots! Well, all except for bozo, who is obviously a brilliant man.

  14. paulhargis53 - Nov 20, 2012 at 4:11 PM

And you whine about it everyday you big fn b**ch.

How hard is it not to read when you see either screen name?

    Jesus.
